Welding With Vulcan 700GR2

Hi Dick;

Having to weld cast iron that you can't clean completely is one problem, but having the repaired cast iron crack because it expands and contracts a different amount or at a different rate than the filler material is the other major problem. The product in the video appeared to deal with the dirty cast iron problem very well, but they didn't even mention the other issue.

Last Saturday, a guy in my metal art class who attends for the shop time, not as an artist, had a cracked cast iron fitting he was going to try to repair for a friend. He had 4 nickel rods that had cost him $4 each. I can't remember whether they were 99% nickel or 55%, but I'll bet that whatever they weren't wouldn't have been much cheaper. My point is that just about any cast iron repair product is likely to be expensive. Make sure you get what you feel is reliable information about whether the cast iron is likely to crack after being repaired with the product in the video.

Dick,

The video is a bit misleading as the rotor
he is welding is not cracked or broken and
therefore still has structure,if broken or
cracked would most likely crack when cooling as
cast is not ductile.

I will put a link lower on the page to about
4 pages of cast iron welding info , it is a
cram course that most us took 30 years to learn
by trial and error. I have been welding cast
with torch for 30+ years.

Also will put a link to some repair that I have
done , pictures are mostly exhaust manifolds, but
some other things. If after reading his pages
looking at my pictures , you want to chat , send
me a phone # and I'll call you.
