Check out new bumper

2002 Chevy truck and the bumper was badly rusted, nothing left but chrome and plastic. Probably most trucks in NY are like this. We don't call the state trucks snowplows anymore, they're salt trucks now. At the first hint of snow they start coming past the house every twenty minutes. Not an exaggeration, I timed them. I figure this will be good for subsequent trucks for years. I can rest my garden tractor loading ramps on top and drive the Power Kings right on. Notice the new differential cover, another result of all the salt they put down Last month I replaced all the brake parts including the backing plates that were completely rusted away.

People get pretty upset when they cant drive 75 mph during an ice storm, even more upset when their time is wasted because they spun out when said roads should have never been slippery, lol idiots. But it has traction control!!! That bumper looks like you'll have to work pretty hard to tear it up, looks pretty stout. Better than them factory ones that hitting anything more than a sparrow will dent them. Dad bumped (no pun intended) a small tree in his yard while backing around a tractor, he said " barely moving " and it barely tapped the corner of the bumper into the lower corner of the box side. Popped box outward right above wheel well, body shop said not fixable, so they installed a new box side, and were going to put a new $800 oem bumper on it. He asked if he paid the difference if he could put a better bumper on it and they said no problem. For an extra $250 he got one built out of 3/8 and 1/2 inch diamond tread steel. Now he can back into stuff full speed with no worries, lol. Ross

And I thought MO was bad. Now I feel better. They do some of the same here, and begin salting at first sign of a flurry, and often the road is white with salt, and no snow or ice to be seen. Then we hear how state has no money for roads.....go figure. I figure we are spending a good bit of it replacing those 4 door salt trucks, and diesel to run them on dry roads. End of rant, but I am just like you and tired of replacing perfectly good vehicles that are simply rusted away due to the excess salt.

An under carriage wash helps reduce rust out. I try to wait until April or May, after spring rains wash the salt is off the roads and the car washes are recirculating fresh water again.

It looks good, and will add some weight to the back end. C8x11.5 channel iron? Would it work to turn the channel around so it does less damage if you accidentally back into something?

Great idea for a bumper and looks like a good job. I have some channel that size and might steal your idea.

Nice work, my truck could use the same treatment from there forward. BTW there was an article in the local paper that said our nearby city of about 275,000 people will use about 27,000 metric tons of road salt this winter. Wow I want to buy a $40,000 vehicle and drive through that!

An old trick we used to do on the farm before winter set in. Grab the little gas powered orchard sprayer and pour some drain oil and kero or water in during warm weather and hose to bejabbers out of the under side. Cover all of your rubber brake lines rotors, etc. and remove the wheeels too. Smokes for a little bit but SURE cuts down on the rust!!!

It's 8 inch channel iron 6ft long I put it on this way so the license plate, and lights and new trailer wiring receptacle would be somewhat protected when I do back into something. We do have a car wash downtown that has an underbody rinse that I use.

Can't wait to see the face of the misses that try to squeeze past that bumper. It's gonna leave a mark!

Salt isn't as much the problem as calcium chloride and calcium magnesate. These both cling much better and corrode aggressively and at lower temps., a local food hauler has went to washing trucks every other day to try and prevent the corrosion and found it hardly made a difference. Its nearly impossible to wash off The trucking industry is seeing very short life of components due to corrosion.
