What do you carry when you're in work clothes?

I have practically a whole drawer full of items I wish I could remember to carry and get used to carrying: Both a Gerber and a Leatherman multi-tool, plus a cheap knockoff version of same; a clip on Gerber folding knife with a sharp 2" blade; folding pocket knife with 4" blade; 3' tape measure; a device that looks exactly like a car key but unfolds 180 degrees to reveal a knife blade/saw, Phillips screwdriver, regular screwdriver, and bottle opener; two keychain sized sheet metal measuring tools (ramp type and notch type); small magnet; keychain 4 blade screwdriver; etc. Yet, with all those useful items to choose from, I usually leave the house with only my keys, wallet, and cell phone in my pockets. What do you carry?

Stan

four things always on. Pocket knife, tape measure, wallet(not always full but there) and truck keys. After that it is what I am doing or got done doing. As in tools, hardware, baler twine or random junk that I pick up.

Pocket knife, an ancient Schrade Old Timer. Maybe some change if I'm on my way BACK from town.

Just never have cared for a multi-tool and I have a decent one, not a cheapo. Too big and doesn't do ANYTHING really well. The knife blade is pretty good, everything else is just a make-do if you're too lazy to go get the proper tool. JMHO.

Also, that spot on my belt is better used for a Sig 226...

I have the same device Stan , its called a Swiss Tech Utilikey and I would never be without it . I have forgotten it a few times and passed through Airport security checkpoints with it still attached to my key ring , it is so compact and resembles a key so much it passes unnoticed .

Apparently when I asked "What do you carry?" a lot of people answered it as if this was a firearms forum rather than a tool forum (I know what some of you are getting ready to type right now, but save it---you know very well what kind of tools it is the intent of this forum to talk about). Nothing wrong with talking about what sidearm you carry, but let's do it as a separate topic. I'm interested in that too. Somebody go ahead and open a new topic concerning that. Let's restrict this one to hand tools and miscellaneous gadgets.

Charles;

As a traveler, maybe you can tell me this. Do other countries treat airlines passengers as if they are going to run amok if they're armed with the pointed file on fingernail clippers, or is that attitude restricted to the hundreds of thousands of security personnel here in the Land of the Free?

Stan

Just as bad here as you are Stan :(
My indiscretion at passing through security with the Swiss key ; if I had been detected ,would have earned me at the least a large fine , loss of the key and perhaps a cancellation of my ticket , at worst a criminal conviction if they could prove I had intent .You can't take a nail clipper onto a commercial flight but once on it you have access to steel cutlery when eating what they call food , no rhyme or reason at all just mindless upholding of illogical regulation.
Perhaps it is not such a bad thing though ,there is some solace in knowing that at least the majority of passengers are unarmed .
Most of our biggest enforcement measures are focused on Bio security . We have so little ' Old World ' disease here that it is worthwhile protecting . No rabies or foot and mouth for a start ,farming would be a lot harder having to combat these problems as well .

Well Stan, I ain't Charles.......but.........what do you think they are doing that for? Maybe trying to prevent another 9/11? What do you think?

Seems at one time I posted something about a 22lr and mentioned off topic. I was corrected by many on this forum that in rural areas a gun was a tool has been for decades. Hence my post earlier

knockoff swiss army knife, pickup keys, money clip (usually only a couple bucks), nitro pills, and my wallet (in case I have to go to town).

Oh, and usually a pair of pliers in holster on belt.

2 sets of keys, buck pocket knife, chap , reading glasses, chapstick, ID badge, flash light, wallet, bottle nitro glycerin, cell phone

Since am in my work cloths is easy to say, have wallet (with ID and couple $), keys, pocket change, fingernail clippers, small 3 blade pocket knife and of course cell phone. Keep bottle nitro in truck and a bottle at work. Grab bottle from truck when in field on tractor.

I'm with you, Mark--if I'm carrying a gun around the house in my work clothes it's because I figure I'll need it for something, just like any other tool I'm carrying. However, I seldom do, as it's more trouble than it's worth unless I have a reason (typically a varmint I've seen but can't catch) for it. Usually, I've got a pen and some scrap paper, a tape measure, and a small crescent wrench. Got a couple good Leathermans, but I don't usually carry one with me--one is in my truck's glove compartment and another in my camping "grab bag". I also carry a small knife I made quite a while ago, with a sheath I also made which has pockets sewn on it for the two cordless drill bits I use the most--phillips and square drive, as that way I can grab any of my drills without having to search for bits.

You're a genius, hot wrench. I never would have thought of that. While we're at it, let's trade the rest of our freedom for absolute security. We'll live in a risk free country, and our totally trustworthy government will take total care of us. It will be even more like heaven than it is now.

There was nothing wrong with your earlier post. I was asking about something else, and when the topic of guns gets introduced, it's pretty easy for a discussion to take a turn in that direction and never come back. That's all I was thinking.

Right front pocket; Smith& Wesson folding pocket knife, house and truck/car keys

Stan in Oly,

Heaven forbid I take my wallet with me, I don't think my finances could take the hit of losing the three dollars I have in there.

So you're fine with letting anyone carry whatever they want in their pockets onto a plane then.

When I go straight to the doctor from work he stands and picks thru my bib pockets and says, Why alla tools? When I go to his office from home he says, Where tools?

4" cresent wrench that I've carried for the past 30 or so years and my pocket knife. In back pocket, my billfold. Dn't need keys because we don't take them out of the vehicles. Don't need to carry a firearm. If I were that worried I truely believe I'd move. Keith

I don't get out much so the wallet is usually on top of the fridge. But every day I carry a Leatherman and a 4'" set of Vise-grips, cheap cell, lighter for torches and usually chap stick.

A pen, sharpie, and soapstone in my shirt, a tape measure on my belt, and if I've been to town There might be some change in my right front pants pocket. I like to keep myself light and agile so I can move quick.

small pocketknife
partial roll of electrical tape
(insulator of course, and it will do all a roll of duct tape will do in a pinch....the duct tape roll won't fit in my pocket)

Wear company supplied coveralls. Upper right chest pocket has chapstick small knife keys gum in it.Upper left chest pocket sharpie highlighter cell phone and id.
Have pens on little holder on left arm. Flashlight in pocket on right leg
Gloves in back left pocket
Radio and 9" pipe wrench in back right pocket. Leave my waist pockets empty for carrying stuff as needed.

Lets see,a Leatherman,A Mini Mag lite, and big honking key ring,on my belt, (I do maintenance at the schools) a pocket knife of some sort, a couple bucks worth of change billfold, and the cell phone small notebook and a pencil

3 sets of keys, Zippo Lighter, some type of pocket knife (Currently a Kershaw "Freefall") Change sometimes. Maybe a pen & cellphone. Something to blow my nose with. Wallet. All kinds of junk...

Actually, I'm not fine with that. My issue is that the government is spending a huge amount of our money, assuming broad new police powers, causing immeasurable inconvenience, and treating citizens like suspects for the purpose of preventing the thing that terrorists already did. Didn't putting locks on cockpit doors already deal pretty effectively with the amount of damage people in the passenger section can now do with tiny blades? Aren't passengers today a lot more likely to jump in and deal with that kind of threat? That has already been demonstrated many times.

I think that our security services' efforts ought to be directed more at trying to protect us from the next thing to happen, not focus on protecting us from the last thing that did.
