Chain saws and repair of them

So today I pulled apart the little Homelite XL wit ha 10 inch bar. Fuel filter is clog so bad I can not blow threw it. I figure I'll get new gas line and fuel filter and a carb kit for it. Took a bit to figure out how to get to the carb found out you have to remove the bar and 4 screws and the whole case will slide off one you take the pull cord cover off. So tomorrow I'll go and get the parts. I also found another chain saw I had forgot about having. It is another Mac with a 10 inch bar

Before you will be fixing every one saw s with in 50 miles of you . They will want the chains sharpened also ,maybe even want you to cut it for them .

I will fix lawn mowers and tractors and that sort of stuff but not sure I would ever want to get into chain saw repair for others

Awe, c'mon, my little XL needs just what you are talking about!

The guy at my saw parts counter did say that there aren't any special parts (moulded fuel lines) there. Repost if you run into a mess. It might help some of us out!

I am lucky I have a friend who it the top repair guy at the local lawn mower repair shop so I can call him and ask him things and he does the same when he needs tractor advice. I have 11 saws and trying to figure out which ones to repair after I get this next one done

Rich: why don't you get one that you can handle running & go cut wood. Why waste time on a bunch when you are not going to use them?

And they will expect them back in two hours. When you do fix them and tell them they are ready. They may come back for them in a month or so. I quit working on them for that very reason. Not worth the hassle.

They will also complain about your forty dollar repair bill. While sitting in their sixty thousand dollar truck. No thanks.

Sounds like you have it under control just keep the saw dust out of the way.
Cordwood Masonry; 128 beams, posts and caps per floor with two floors. Over 100 cord of wood in the wall all hand cut. I've used a chainsaw er two.

The little Mini-Mac will try your patience...

Billy, your reply reminds me of the guy in town that is too nice for his own good. He owns a Simplicity, Dolmar dealership and has a whole wall of repaired weedwackers, chain saws and the like that runs over 4 years old. People have never come back to pick their fixed stuff up.

I'm not very fond of 2 cycle engines. I can't seem to put my finger on exactly why they are so much trouble to repair ! After all they are pretty simple compared to other things I've fixed.
Maybe it's because finding parts is so hard ? Just getting the proper size fuel line is a chore ! Last weed eater I did for the neighbor I ran all over this town and no one had the right size line ! How many miles and how many hours do you want to waste on something you can pitch in the junk and go get another for $ 100 to $ 200 ?
Same with off brand cheapo lawn mowers.
Got to get up into the high dollar mowers before their worth fixing. Name brands that actually have dealers that stock or can order the proper parts.
My personal chainsaw is an older Sthil 032AV ?
Barely use it but it always seems ready to go. I think the most it ever took to start it was 6 pulls ? It has sat for over a year without use I'm sure. If I remember I try to at least once a year drain the gas out and put fresh in it. I'm sure it has went longer than a year before. Just cheap old 87 octane with 10% ethanol and always use Sthil mix at 50:1 and some stabil too. Only one time in the life of this saw have I put new diaphrams in the carb. and that was from it not wanting to sit and idle. That was in recent years. Main fuel line was still good but I replaced the other line.

old, you think you're complaining about chainsaws now? Wait until you tear into that MiniMac.

They are not fun to work on.

The small Mac appears to be locked up so it will be one of the last saws I even think about messing with

It is a case of I will be getting help clearing the driveway right of way out of over grown trees and brush so I need to have more running then normal

Rich, just curious, you mentioned needing to cut timber out along your road per request from the county. Is this one of the situations like I have had where the county is trying to take land that does not belong to them? I have been told the county I live in has 40 feet of supposed easement, however my deeds and abstract differ, and there is actually no easement through my place, it was simply a verbal agreement many years ago when the original road was built between landowners and county at the time. About once every 5 years or so I get told to move my fences and they have a 40 foot easement. I request documentation, never see it, and they go away until next time. Funny part is they never really ask or have offered to pay for what has always been under my fence. Go figure.

Hello mkirsch,

They are cute little saws, but you better have a LITTLE patience! I can just picture him now doing a wind up like a pitcher on the mound.........

Guido.

Has nothing to do with the county. My driveway crosses 2 others peoples land and I have a right of way to drive over there land which is 30 feet but over the years since no one cuts any thing a number of small tree are growing up and UPS complains about the limbs hitting there truck

Oh, I can just imagine the tirade that old would pitch if he ever tried to tear into that MiniMac. The Poulan generated three threads. I'm thinking six or seven...

About the only way I will mess with the mini mac is if it frees up since it appears to be locked up

Should have added this to the other post. I figure just doing the carb on this Homelite XL will be bad enough. I picked up the carb kit and fuel filter today and cost me all of $13

If you ever get a chance to buy one of the older Tanaka chainsaws--NOT MADE in China, try it.
I have Stihl, Echo, Makita and Husqvarna.
Never been impressed by any of them as I am with my Tanaka ECV4501.
I now understand why they cost more then their competitors.
Simple design with extra quality, like each screw backed up with flat washer for plastic, full magnesium engine and no Chinese parts.
Takes about two minutes or less to remove carburetor.
Just a shame that they are virtually all Communist made now, but I don't and wont know about them.

Old,
Thought about you when I was clearing a 10ft wide trail in my gravel pit. Got about 250 ft done. Another 250 ft to go. Don't think anything has driven on this ground in 40 years. Mostly cutting out Asian honeysuckle and small saplings. I would cut for about a minute and spend about 5 minutes digging myself out of the branches. Even worked up a sweat. Good cure for cabin fever. I plan to stay as active as I can this winter and drop about 15.

Hello old,

I got mostly yellow saws here, weed whacker blower, trimmer. So I could use donor stuff
HA!JA! Like I said patience. They are put together like a watch!

Guido.

I'd rather tear into into a running time bomb than another Mini-Mac. Jeeze! The later ones weren't as bad as the older ones, but still...

I always thought it was McCullochs revenge on non-pros wanting a Big Yellow Saw but not having the bucks or the back for one.

I have 2 macs that most likely will be parts saws since both seem to be locked up. Also finding that years of doing things and all are not good on me. Had lots of trouble working on this carb for the homelite due to my hands not being as steady as they once where plus the eye sight is going also

One is a 10-10 I think and the other is the mini mac not sure of the model of it

Hello bret4207,

Then little ones are just fun to work on. You just have to have many tweezers. Hemostat's help also....................... HA!HA!

HAR! Yeah, and you have to ignore the idea that a straight line is the shortest distance, or best way to cover that distance, between 2 points.

If I wanted to work on clocks, I wouldn't be wrenching on chainsaws!

The 10-10, unless it's corroded away from sitting on concrete or the piston is welded to the jug, can probably be made to run without a lot of fuss. The 10 series on the whole are pretty simple and reliable saws and there must be 500 10-10 parts saws on Ebay every day. I always liked the larger 7-10 more better, but the 10-10 has cut an awful lot of wood.

Mac had the 10-10, Homie had the XL12, Pioneer had the 1200, Poulan had the 306. Must be a gazillion of each still out there cutting wood.
