Noise Reduction

Had a request from the guys in the shop to try to
quiet down the compressor. It's a 10HP Ingersol
recip, typical clanging, hammering, compressor.

It sits in the corner of the shop, concrete tilt
wall building. It's pretty crowded back there, a
spare compressor and another machine close to it.
Thought about building an enclosure around it,
but it would be in the way, especially come time
to get it out or to work on it, plus the heat
entrapment.

Found some of these:

Has anyone ever tried them? I could build a
standing frame or hang them from the ceiling.

Other suggestions?

Thanks, Steve.

I built a 1" thick plywood box lined with acoustic ceiling panels. The front opens wide for service It has a large lower vent hole and top vent hole with a fan that runs when the compressor runs. Can barely hear it. I also replaced the compressors air filter with one off an old 70s V8. Quieted the intake well.

Hello Steve@Advanced,

The majority of the noise from the compressor comes from the air intake. Try altering the air flow by putting your hand close to the air intake it will verify what I said.
Try it!

Guido.

They lined some of the offices at work with those several years ago to keep out tow motor noise from the warehouse. Don't know how well they work as I never go behind the wall.

put mine in enclosed cabinet. front section comes off for servicedoor. two eighty gal tanks tee together behind cabinet. i would never put unit out in the cold.
