I hate chain saws Part 2

Ok so today the boy is here so I went out and pulled out all the chain saws I have. Played with the one Poulun and can make it run if I can hold the coke on part way so figure fuel filter. I also played with the little Homelite I have and with starter fluid it will fire up and run so carb issues. Same with 2 old large Macs I have. So total I have is 2 Poulan saws. 2 Homelite one 10 inch and one 16 inch. 3 Macs one is locked up. And all of them are big and heavy. Also have one old Pioneer that I did not try and then also the big boys 2 old David Bailey saws than I did not try to make run. Guess I'll be playing with a couple chain saws in the near future

old I have a old david bradly that I sawed tons of wood with 25 yr,s ago ( I love that old saw) but iam your age and man that thing looks havey. now i rug the small saw. nad hope that I can keep the carb from guming up. Bob

Back in the 70's I had a good running David Bradley, gear driven saw, which I had bought used. After an hour of trying to cut fire wood, I threw it in the Illinois River, and drove back home and got my Homelite Zip, and came back and cut my firewood.

Ya the boy pulled the Old D/B out of where it was. It is locked up right now but soaking in ATF. The boy wants me to see if I can get ti running again. Only reason I stopped using it was the fact a tree fell on it and broke the handle and also broke the carb off. I got the other D/B for parts and just never got around to fixing it. I to cut tons of wood with that D/B it was slow but all you had to do was set in on a log and it would fall threw it. Yep big and heavy and the chain ran slower then most but sure as heck would cut

Ya that gear drive slowed the chain down a good bit but with a good sharp chain it would cut faster then the Homelite XL12 I had and still have

My 20 year old Poulan wouldn't run without the choke rod pulled out.
New carburetor etc made no difference. Eventually discovered fuel line had almost swollen shut at point where fuel line exits thru the fuel tank wall. New line fixed it.

Old,
I went to sears today to buy a new chain for my 18 inch craftsman electric which is made by Worx. Chain is made by oregon, S63, $25 with tax. My old poulan pro, which only lasted 3 months, used an 18 inch chainsaws, S62. But it's one link too short. I have a new S62 and nothing to put it on.

I've looked on the internet for a cheaper chain, Can't find any S63 anyplace.

Well get your generator running and go to sears. The electric craftsman is on sale for $99. It comes with 2 chains. So if I ever need a new bar, I'll just buy a new chainsaw. Get a new bar and two chains and pay very little more for the motor.

Let go of a few bucks and try one. I like mine so much, I have 2. Mine starts everytime I pull the trigger. Never has failed me.

I have 2 electric chain saws and both I use from time to time but by the time I fire up a generator and all the cast is not worth it

Have you tried adjusting the carb? I would certainly try opening up the high speed jet, I have never seen one yet that you can't adjust if your determined enough!

Old your a skilled fellow. Why waste so much of your time fixing saws that where not very good when they where brand new???

I see good better named saws for sale all of the time for not high dollars. I mean a $100-200 will buy you one if you watch for deals.

If you want to repair one then start out with a better saw.

I bought a Stihl 034 last year that would not run. I gave $75 with two good chains. It needed a new carb kit, $15, and starts and runs like a new one. So I got $90 in it.

I have found that a heavier saw will not work you was bad as a light saw. You can let the weight do the work for you rather than having to push and tug on a lighter saw.

I know your budget is tight but you have many saws and none that are running right now. So maybe sell some of the ones you have and get one better one to use????

your local saw dealer can break that chain & put an extra link in. Friend of mine used to buy new chains that were one link too short & bring them to me to put a link in. I charged him 50 cents each time I did it.

Well if I could get my new chain S62 extended for less than $25, I'll be ahead of he game. Nice to know.

Old,
It sounds to me like you are either very hard on chainsaws, you collect junk chainsaws or all chainsaws are prone to failure. Which is it? I concluded all are prone to failure sooner or later. For me it was sooner, 3 months.

If I had that much junk, I would first try to sell it on craigslist. Then I would clean up the mess and send it to the recyclers. Take the money and buy something that will work. Also get an extended warranty with it.

I have a Clinton from maybe '58. Ran when parked.
I also have a Reminton electric that I like very well, starts every time I pull the trigger. I have a belt driven 4000 watt generator that is easy to mount on my garden tractor, if I'm too far from power.

(quoted from post at 03:09:03 01/12/15) Early Poulans were re-painted Pioneers and were good saws in their day. Not the junk you get today. Parts are getting scarce though.

Once again- NO, they were not! 2 separate companies that had nothing to do with each other until the Pioneer-Partner NAME (they weren't Pioneer saws) was acquired by Electrolux-Husqvarna and some years later Husqvarna bought Poulan.

On second thought, I think you're thinking of Poulan Pro which isn't the same as Poulan. The older Poulans were lime green not the modern yellow Poulan color. Some of the early Poulan Pros were said to be rebadged very, very late model Pioneers, but early Poulans and Pioneers had nothing in common. Poulan and Poulan Pro are 2 different companies, just like Pioneer and Pioneer-Partner or McCulloch Motors Corp and todays "McCulloch" are completely different companies. Poulan has undergone at least 3 changes- POULAN MANUFACTURING CORP., Poulan PRO, POULAN (BEAIRD POULAN), POULAN (ELECTROLUX) and POULAN/WEED EATER.

I have an electric chainsaw and only use it if I'am up in a tree in the yard taking down several limbs. But for cleaning up a tree that is on ground they are a pain in the butt. Dragging a cord around and getting it hung is a pain. The only thing nice about an electric is you don't have to start them when your in the tree.I have a small 1.7 HP top handled chainsaw that will out cut any 3-4 HP electric chainsaw.

Just a bunch of saws I collected over the year. Picked many up at auctions cheap and got running. Some where given to me and others I got from my dad or brother. Yes they are prone to no working if left sit a long time with out being run

Ya one of the Local lawn mower shops will cut chain to size so you can buy chains cheaper from them then buy a boxed chain

Ya the Mac 250 I have has a wide bar on it and yep heavy. I hope to be able to get at least 4 saws up and running soon

I have a 250 and a 300. That 300 will run all day, every day if you are man enough to do it. I'm not anymore! I also have a 1-50 that dates from the same time I do, 1959, that I need to finish fixing. What a monster!
