Inexpesive way to reverse a drill press

Is there an inexpensive way to reverse a drill press? I would like to be able to use left hand drill bits in my press from time to time.
Thanks,
Bill

An ordinary four pole switch used on three way household lighting circuits. Swap the polarity of the power supplying the start windings.
Motor needs to be stopped when the switch is flicked over or it won't reverse.

Grainger has a reverser switch, with instructions. I installed one on my 120 v. wood lathe to speed up sanding. A 3 position drum switch.

The start winding circuit would pass through the switch Buick mentioned.

Is there a connection diagram on the nameplate or electrical junction box cover plate of your motor? If so, post a photo, and we will show you in detail how to connect a simple reversing switch.

The cheapest way would be to twist one of the drive belts. You would need a longer belt but as long as it stayed on would cost less then any ting else. You can also look at the motor and see if it is reversible and if it is you just have to more a couple wires when you want it to spin backwards

Just curious as to what application you would have for a left hand bit in a drill press.
Only time I have ever used them was for removing a broken screw and rarley on something that would fit in a drill press.

I put a reverse on my drill press in order to use it for tapping threads. I used one switch to do the reversing switch and a push button momentary contact foot switch so I can do my work with my hands and control the off and on with my foot. I have put in a single pole double throw switch for the power so I have the choice of the foot switch or the more conventional off-on switch. I don't necessarily do things the way most others would.

I think the common name is "drum switch".
I bought one years ago at a flea market and I
was going to hook it up to my drill press if I ever needed. Ain't needed it yet.
I use LH bits only for extracting broken bolts and they are not usually in a position where I can use the drill press.
I have thought of using a transmission out of one of those little ride-on mowers to give me additional speeds. That would give reverse as well.

If your drill press motor is reversible, it's easy to make a reversing switch out of a common DPDT toggle switch, which is usually small enough to fit in the motor terminal box. Once mounted, connect the reversing wires (Usually 5&8) to the center two switch terminals, then connect the outer 4 terminals to where the #5&8 wires would normally go, wiring the outer 4 switch terminals in an X pattern(Top right to lower left, top left to lower right.. That way you can reverse the motor by cutting power until it stops, then flip the toggle switch and turn the power back on.

I have all the motors on my grain cleaner augers wired this way for easy auger clean out.
