Butyl tape for windows

I need to replace the seal on a camper shell long window and am wondering if there is something better than the standard butyl tape. The tape likes to creep out of the gap over time and doesn't seem to last all that long anyway. Someone added silicon sealant to try and stop leaks, and it's almost impossible to get it all off the pebbled vinyl shell.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you thought about the tape/caulk that is used to seal grain bin sheets? Depending on how the window is attached to the camper shell(it needs something bolts/rivets to compress the caulk) that would be my suggestion. I took down 4 bins last summer that were put up in the 70's and the caulk was still pliable and holding its seal.

The grain bin rolls all are 1/4" wide; the grey butyl tape usually is 3/4" or 1" wide. I probably need 3/4" tape. And the bin rolls are only sold in lots of 10 or more on eBay. There is nothing said about the material from which they are made.

we always used acustic seal when installing bay windows in vans conversions as it would seal well and never dried out and was easy to clean up afterwards
its the same stuff you use on vapour barrier between the bottom plate and the floor on housesto keep out wind
should beable to get itat any hardware store or building supply
only a few bucks a tube
one tube good for about 4 van bay windows

Slowpoke, I was looking for butyl tape for installing roofing panels awhile back. Found a place in Baltimore with it. The sales guy said he'd sell me a roll if I really wanted it, but he guaranteed it would leak.

That, I'd already seen, as these were recycled panels and somebody had used cases of silicone caulk trying to plug up the leaks.

What the guy recommended, and worked perfectly, was made of EPDM, sticky on one side and compressed with your stop. Same product I used more than 20 years ago on my house windows, still in great shape with all that sun exposure.

They have 2 sizes. I bought 1000' rolls of both if you only need a few feet. A Danish product that you shouldn't ever need to replace. Click below for the catalog. Product numbers are GG05 and GG10. They will sell smaller quantities.

The company has excellent tech help and products you won't find elsewhere.
