what do I call, the bits I am looking for?

I would like to buy drill bits, that I can use to clean carburetor passages. I now use tip cleaners, for acetelene torches, and will probably, continue to use them, most of the time. sometimes it would be more efecient to use a small bit, to allow cleaner to seep in to corroded passages. I would like to buy drill bits smaller than 1/16 inch, which I could use with my fingers, or turn with a tap tool. Are these called wire guage bits, or something else? I remember the Boeing Co had some very small bits in their tool room, that had hex ends on them around 1/4 inch in size It looked like a hex button that one end was imbedded in. I hope some one can tell me! Thanks Ralph

Number drill bits. The higher number the smaller it is. Roberts carb sells the proper size ones in longer length's.

Thanks guys! As late as it was, when I posted, I expected to wait till tomarrow for a reply. Four of you guys got back while I was reading tool talk, and it sounds like I have the answers I needed.

I use them at work. I am a kitchen mechanic. We use them to gauge gas orifice holes. A complete set comes in a blue plastic folding box with about 42 drills. go from 60 to80 with a couple of wisker cleaners too. List price is like $130 but you can find them for half that on some web sites. VERY handy little tools and very fragile!! They have brass knobs on them so they are true finger drills. name on box is anderson and forrester mmade in Denver,co.

Here is what I use for that. A torch tip cleaning drill set. The bits store in the handle and I warn you ahead of time, dont dump them out except on something white and in good light.

You should be able to get a set of 'micro drills' at any hobby/modeling store dirt cheap (under $10). I have a set I've used on carburetors for decades.

you got really whatch them on the new stuff as it will drill out some material and make passages actually larger.i dunk them in an ultrasoinc cleaner nowdays. there not that high priced nowdays. on lot of small engines you can't mess with cleaning them for all more new carb is

Well i do a lot of carb.'s and i have a NUMBERS drill bit set and a torch cleaning drill bit set that uses a pin vice , you can buy one of them at the welding supply house . Just got a new set and they run around 8.50.

Usually you want # 60-80 in a small box . The box will have a piece of scotch tape to hold the bits in place they are so small. They can do just about any carb work.

Roberts sells the correct size bits for the dltx carburetors. They are about 6" long so you can get into the deep passages.

You might look at Dremal tool parts. My Dremal tool came with a number of real small drill bits

Many years ago, I used to play the guitar. When I would re-string the thing, I would cut the ends off at the neck. I found that these ends,(wire and flat wound) are excellent for cleaning out carburetor jets and passages. They are about six inches long, very stiff, and are in various sizes. Just perfect! They also last forever. Hope this helps. Jonathan

I believe you are looking for small reamers.
You do not want to drill anything just ream the existing hole.

I use small copper strands from stranded copper wire. I don't want to change the size of the passages or jets. The copper should be softer than the jet or passages in order to prevent damage. Then blow through them or use carburetor cleaner to flush it.
