What welding rod

The situation is an antique horse drawn sickle mower, used as a yard ornament. Mom was moving it and hooked the sickle on a tree and broke the tongue pocket off the cast iron frame.

On closer inspection it broke where it had been broken and welded (poorly) at some time in the past.

I want to stick it back together again if I can.

What are my options? Nickel rod? Any other ideas? Do you have to wear a respirator when welding with nickel rod?

Thanks! Kelvin

Ni-Rod works the best and if you can preheat the part and also grind a V into that works better. If you can heat the part up to say 500 degrees in an oven then pull it out and weld it up then put it back in the over bring it back up to temp then turn off oven and let it cool. Not need to wear a mask

Old, Have you tried the non nickle welding rod that is labeled 2800? It is much cheaper and does a very smooth and strong weld. I have repaired several cast iron things from very heavy cast, grinding a deep vee, to a job I just did on some very thin cast on the hopper of an apple grinder.

Like others said : make sure if it was brazed all the brass has to come off . Welding does not work on brazed areas. MIG is an acceptable method for cast repair. Not sure about the fumes other than avoid all fumes.

I think the rods I have been using are nomacast. A file won't touch it but the side grinder works well.
