MY TRACTOR WILL NOT RUN WITH THE DISTRIBUTOR IN PLACE BUT RUNS BEAUTIFUL WITHOUT THE DISTRIBUTOR. WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVISE.

I HAVE POSTED A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE

There's a simple word that describes such a hoax, (which involves excrement from the male form of the bovine species), but this is a polite Forum (Miss Kim's parlor) and we are expected to not use such language here.

Hi "Bob" it is not a hoax it is really happening. We need to solve this problem. I can do another video if required but we need to solve the problem not be accused of creating a hoax. We need to use the tractor for slashing. If anyone has a solution please let us know.

I posted the ' elaborate hoax ' comment on You Tube . At first I thought it would have to be . Since then I have forwarded the clip to a number of expert forums , lets hope a solution is offered .
Strangest thing I have ever seen , carbon in the engine or plugs might make it run on a little but it sounds too regular for any kind of detonation ignition .
Keep an eye on it or some multinational company might spirit it away one dark night .

Hey guys I HAVE DONE THAT BEFORE (cap removed and just hanging there) AND THE TRACTOR STILL RAN although it was a bit rough on a Massey Harris 4 cylinder Continental. ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE heres why. When the points open (and timing is still the same) theres still a HV spark at the coil wire which is still wired to the caps center terminal. When that happens the spark can still jump from the caps inner central (rotor) terminal over to one of the brass pickups which leads to a plug wire so a plug can still fire even with cap hanging there. The resistance across a plugs gap that is under compression is different then across a plugs gap that is not. I have often seen bad rotor tips that had a short from the steel pickup springy down to where it fits on the distributors rotor shaft which created a short so she couldn't run.

NO BS I ACTUALLY DID THAT SAME THING AND THE TRACTOR RAN but mine didn't run near as well lol. The sparks still there and jumps form the inner cap center over to a pickup which leads to a plug wire to a plug so it can still fire. My buddy couldn't believe it when I showed him lol

If you were at Florida Flywheelers next week (February show also) I have an ignition display set up as an exhibit stop by and I can explain more.

Thanks for all the advise much appreciated.

I have made another video of the fergie in action

Consensus is that carbon tracking on the inside of the cap is the culprit . Still baffled as to how it is running so well and under load . Please keep us posted on any developments , the second video certainly put paid to the ' hoax ' theory .

Pretty simple actually, typical of things that can cause firing failure via the normal rotor to cap distribution are:

Cracks in cap

Carbon traces in cap

Shorted rotor that shorts the spark to the
distributor shaft instead of to the caps pickup
terminals

As I noted before she can still fire even with the cap and rotor removed and dangling in air since the HV spark can still jump from the caps internal center (rotor pickup) tower over to a plug wire terminal.

A new cap and rotor which isn't all that expensive and easy to install would be a good start.

My bet is that the timing is so far off that when the cap is on the rotor sends the spark to the wrong cylinder (exhaust stroke) and it will not fire. When the cap is off, the spark goes to many cylinders and is able to hit a cylinder that is positioned to fire.

The rotor is probably cracked allowing it to short to the distributor shaft (it doesn't take much). I had a racecar with a real powerful ignition system, I had to change the rotor in it on a regular basis because after a while it would actually burn very small hole through the rotor to the distributor shaft. The first time it did that it took me a while to figure out why it quit running. It would be running then just die out like you cut the ignition switch off. I figured out the problem the same way, it would run with the distributor cap off just like the tractor in the video.
