Old Sears 17" Drill Press

I have an older Sears 17" drill press I'm restoring and I need some help. Many years ago, someone replaced the 4 step motor pulley with a single groove pulley. I'm looking to replace the pulley with one close to the original.

The drill press is a model 113213873. If someone has one, can you measure the large and small portions of the pulley for me please? It's the pulley on the far right of the attached picture.

It's a 3/4 HP 16 Speed.

OR if you have a scrap press with the right pulley I'd be interested in buying it.

Thanks,
Richard

I'm a little confused. Since you have the model
number why not just do a search on the Sears 'parts'
site? Even if you get the part # from a downloaded
manual, etc., you can Google it and I bet you'd come
up with one.

It's old and obsolete, and Sears never provided any details about their parts because they wanted you to buy from them.

Thanks tho.

The motor pulley is a common item. Should be able to get it from a bearing supply, McMaster, etc. Get the motor shaft size, try to get the pulleys about the same size and belt pitch as the front pulley.

I would think other than the shaft size the steps and diameter's of the pulley you need would have to be a mirror image of your middle pulley, otherwise your alignment and belt tension will be different every time you try to change speeds.

No, the motor pulley does not have the same size pulley steps as the center pulley. The Sears center pulley is on a spring loaded shaft so it can move to allow the belt tension to change. The motor is on a rack and pinion tensioner so you can move a lever to slacken the belts, change ratios, and then tighten them back up.

Someone on another forum had this press and reported their pulley sizes for me.

2", 2.5", 3.5", 4-1/4" so I ordered a step pulley just like that except it max's out at 4"

If you have the speed chart for your drill, and the sizes of the
other pulleys, it should be easy enough to calculate the sizes
needed for the missing pulley.

Unless, of course, someone has changed the original motor to
one that has a different R.P.M.

My craftsman drill press may be 75 years old. Have
no clue about model numbers. I do know that
everything I have that has 2 multiple size pulleys
to change speeds both pulleys are identical in
size. So if you have the front pulley, the motor
pulley should be the same, just upside down on the
motor.

Looks just like to Buffalo one I have. A lot of old drill presses where built by the same company then sold to places like sears as there store brand and the pulley is probably a common size

I have the exact same unit here that is junk. Shoot me an e mail and I will get with you on the pulley. That unit was made here in Paris Tn in a Emmerson electric plant for Sears.

Well I went to the bottom and read where your was made in Tawin so I may not have the exact pulley but mine looks like yours. I know they made a lot of the Sears units here in Paris.

Thanks. My email is Rwskinner AT ccwip DOT net

The original pulley was a 4 groove with I'm told measured 4.250" on the large side and about 2" on the small end. It has a 5/8" bore.

For sure anything "close" will work. You might need a belt that's an inch shorter or longer, but that shouldn't be a problem.
