With my new to me laptop running Lynx Ubuntu,
How do I install a program (I have the disk)?
Everything I see is for online downloads.
What am I missing here?
I was running Lynx Zorin on the old laptop till it died.
Any ideas? Thanks

"I have the disk."

I'm not sure what you mean. What's on the disk?

Are you saying you have Ubuntu installed and you want to install an application? Or are you trying to install Ubuntu itself? Is the program you're trying to install available as a Debian package (a file with a ".deb" extension)? It's possible to install programs that aren't packaged, but it's more difficult.

Hopefully you mean Linux, not Lynx.

A few more details and someone should be able to help you out. I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu, but I can probably get you pointed in the right direction.

Don't know linux. I would go to craigslist and check out the linux forum or the apple forum. Lots of computer geeks

buntu is based on Debian and requires a ".deb" package or a binary. I did an online search for you and maybe this link will help: http://www.howtogeek.com/142414/how-to-install-software-from-outside-ubuntus-software-repositories/

See how much easier Linux is over Windows :?

> Sorry my error Linux. I'm trying to install a program (Map/GPS)

OK. Would this by any chance be a Windows program? Maybe the software that came with your GPS? Most GPS manufacturers only provide Windows and Mac executables for their software. There's little incentive for them to support Linux.

Linux doesn't run Windows programs. Well, that's not quite true; Linux runs programs that have been compiled to run on Linux, but in many cases it's possible to run Windows programs under Linux using a package called WINE. WINE isn't typically installed by default, so your first step would be to install it. Open a terminal window and enter the following command:

sudo apt-get install wine

This will download WINE and all its dependencies. If it doesn't work, you may not have sudo privileges, which is a different problem.

Now you'll have to figure out how to get your Windows program installed and running under Wine. Frankly, I've never done this, but you can find the basic instructions at the link below. If you google "linux wine" you will find a lot of resources.

You need to put the disk in the computer, and somehow navigate to the directory structure on that disk, and execute the installation program/script, if it has one.

Linux in the old days, you had to manually "mount" floppy disks, CDs, and DVD-ROMs as a directory on the system. These days it should be automatic when it senses the disk is inserted.

The disk should have come with some sort of documentation for installing, or at least how to access it...
