Identifying non weldable aluminum alloys

I'm thinking the way is start with known alloys to begin. Google searching tells me if it will take a polish it is weldable , but I can think of 2024 which will polish and is not weldable. Another forum says hydroflouric acid . No thank you to the hydroflouric acid test. { Pretty sure that acid eats glass]. Any "home shop" methods to at least see if the aluminum is alloyed with copper or is non-weldable.

is a specifica application you are working on or just a general issue?

if you think you have a piece of aluminum you can't tig, and need to join, have you tried the soldering rods?

The problem is 2024 will weld just fine, but it will stress crack in the heat affect zone and will break without warning most times. This is why it is considered unweldable. 7075 has the same issues.

I need to make a weldable tab and not much of my stock has markings . I remade my piece yesterday from 6061 so I know where I stand when I go to weld it.
