Air compressor question

My 8 year old Kobolt compressor is slowly dying. It's a 5 hp, 80 gal. 2-stage unit.

I am looking at a 5, 80 gal, 2-stage Quincy compressor.

Is there any real advantage to go with a 7.5, 80 gal, unit? There only difference I see is 23 cfm for the 7.5 versus 19 cfm for the 5.

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks

Think you'll be happy with the Quincy. The size you choose is entirely up to you and your needs. If you can get the 7.5 for a decent price, I'd go with it. Better too much than not enough, have a little cushion for future expansion.

I've got a Quincy QT-5 ? (will have to go out & double check that #). Have owned it several years, I believe it's a 17 CFM. I know we've never been able to run it out of air. Good enough for any farm shop I'm sure. Make sure it's got the good motor, mine has a 1750 RPM Baldor motor. When I bought it they had a cheaper compressor with that phoney, POS 3400 RPM motor.

Durability will depend on the speed the pump is running. Many times to get more CFM they just run the pump faster with more HP. It will be the same pump just run faster.

Quincy is a professional grade compressor, I have a 5HP and it runs out of air if I use sandblast cabinet, would go 7.5HP if you plan for that.

I bought a 5hp 80 gal compressor at a time when I had employees doing different jobs. Now I work alone and it's far more compressor than I need. I sure wouldn't upgrade to a larger compressor. 8 years isn't very old for a compressor. Mine is 22 years old and all I replaced was the motor. I also have a portable compressor that is 27 years old but it was overhauled once. There isn't very much to a air compressor and usually you can find rebuild kits on ebay cheap. I would overhaul the compressor you have.

Before you choose a 7.5 HP unit to replace a 5 HP one, make sure your electric supply is adequate to serve the larger unit. What's adequate for a 5 HP installation may not be for a 7.4 HP one.

Thank you everyone for your comments and opinions. Exactly what I wanted. Good info was given. I do use a sandblast cabinet quite abit. Takes about 10 cfm. I also do have plenty of power in my shop. I have a 200A service.

I did think of re-building, just not sure. I liked the idea a Quincy is rated at 50,000 hours.

Then something must be wrong with it (post right above )I have an industrial IR 5hp/80 gal and it will shut off running my 80# pressure pot sandblaster. In fact it will shut off with the air blower nozzle held wide open. It did it when new in 1981 and still does it today. He needs no more than 5 hp if he goes continues duty compressor.
