heater core repair

Was loosing water from my semi, thought it was a motor problem since there was never anything on the ground. But then I lifted the bed and saw antifreeze around the bunk heater. The antifreeze was dropping right onto the muffler and burning up so it never hit the ground. So today I decided to take it apart and fix it. Thought it would be an interesting welding job, but it turned out not to be.

Here are some pics of what I had to deal with.

Had to remove the closet to get to these two bolts.

Had to pull the unit out to get the core out.

Once I got it out I pressure tested it and found that the leak was where the tank attached to the core. I've run into this before with these plastic tanks, they are held on by just crimping a metal ring around them and they get loose and leak.

So I just had to crimp it with a vicegrip to seal it up again.

Then just put everything back together. About 3 hours to take it apart and put it back together, and 10 minutes to fix the part.

Yeah, that's not uncommon for that type core. I have taken them apart and sealed them with silicone and re rimped them too. Usually works. They have an o-ring in there to seal so it just needed to be tightened.

The radiator in my 1990 IH 8100 (Cummins L10) sprung a slow leak this past summer. The radiator construction was just like your heater core. I couldn't pin point anything, and given its age, I replaced it. Maybe I didn't have to?

Depends, first you would have to find the leak. But if it leaked around the tank like that you could likely fix it. For one that old I would probly take it apart and seal it with silicone because the o-ring is likely getting old. You can buy replacement rings too.

I started down the road one day last week with the '13 Mack that I drive occasionally for friends and low coolant light came on. I called one of them and he told me that it had not come on before. So I pulle into my place to check it out. I found nothing and have never seen any leakage, but it was down a half gallon. I will have to check the heater next time I drive it. They are not great with maintenance.
