Hi Larry,
That is some chicken house you have: slab foundation and cinderblock wall. My hens never had it so good. We did have a slab leak under our house, though, and had to replace the line above the brickledge to enter the house. The plumber insulated the line with Armaflex(dense foam insulation for AC lines) but I noticed a tear at ground level. Is there a good way to mend that stuff?

se contact cement.

I remolded a house built in the 20's. They filled the wall with sawdust around the water pipes. Perhaps back then insulation was invented yet.

Yup, good old farmers insulation. The exposed water line in our chicken house was wrapped the same way. My grandfather used to seal cracks in the barn wall with manure. Living through a depression taught one to make do with what you had availible.

I'm not surprised you found a few splits! That's what I would call "feel-good" insulation. (It makes you feel good that you did something to stop it from freezing, even if the pipe froze the first cold night.)
