Another question about propane tanks

There was a question yesterday about disposing of propane tanks, and it eventually expanded to provide quite a bit of related information. I'm going to post a question as a new thread so that those who previously responded won't think that thread is done and skip over it.

Is there an adaptor that allows you to connect the new style valve to a regulator for a cutting torch? One of the listed advantages of using propane for cutting and heating instead of using acetylene is that you can buy propane any day of the week. But if you run out of acetylene on a weekend, you won't be able to get more until Monday. Also, if you have the old style valve and only a welding gas supplier will refill it, you're not necessarily going to be able to get the best price on propane when you need more and it's not a weekend emergency.

the opd valves on my walmart exchanged 20 lb. camper tanks are threaded externally for the new style connecter and threaded left hand internally for the old style connecter which is the same as a torch regulator

I don't think you need any adapter, the new valves have the same female POL threads that they have always had. The new valves have an OPD float valve, and a safety valve to prevent releasing gas without being connected to a male POL fitting. They also have external ACME threads for the new grill regulators, so they can be changed without a wrench.

I dont know what regulator is used for cutting but you can buy the part that attaches to the tank with a hose or pipe threads at any camper supply place or at TSC. As for filling the propane tanks it isnt as complicated as all that. Most, but not all of the current style BBQ size tanks also have the internal threads for the old style non-flow control tank fitting. When you exchange tanks you just have to remove the plastic cover and look to see if the male threads are there. I cant imagine that a cutting torch would use more gas than a Black (highest flow) control fitting would easily handle, I run a weed burner with one of them.
