Woods mower

I just got a Woods M84-2 Shredder given to me. The gear box is broke and the gears shot. The gear box is $1300 From Woods. Has anyone used a different gear box and had to modify the mounting? I am looking at an Omni box. Any openions on Omni?

Never heard of them, but you get what you pay for. However, if you are mowing pasture that is just grass and it will have an even load on it I would say it will be fine. Keep oil in it and don't loan it to anyone who will abuse it. We're talking a rough cut mower, aren't we?

If you like to play Paul Bunyan with you shredder you best fork out the cash.

Dave You need to be looking for another WOODS dealer, that price is about 40% over woods list price.. He is gouging you. I THINK there is a comer gear box that will ALMOST fit but the omin is pretty cheap stuff.

I believe that Woods is one of the best, so I would tend to repair it. I used to borrow my neighbor's before I got my own. Since I used to have to weld the gear box back into it before I could use it , I would say that yes, you should be able to adapt something else.

Dave,
Omni gearboxes come in various sizes and ratings. They have been used by Alamo, Bush Hog, Landpride, Woods, Rhino and many other companies, they are a major provider of mower gearboxes. Your biggest problem will be mounting the gearbox and the blade carrier. Omni doesn't offer a side mounting gearbox like your original one and all of their gearboxes have a splined output shaft, I believe your M84 Woods had a single key shaft out the bottom to mount your blade carrier. To use an Omni, ITG, Comer or Bondioli gearbox you will need to alter the mounting to accommodate a bottom flange mounted gearbox and at the very least swap out the mounting hub in the blade carrier to match the new gearbox. I guess you need to compare the cost of the replacement gearbox and hub along with labor versus the cost of replacing it with a Woods box. Current suggested list price for the gearbox, code 18482, is $ 1182.62. An Omni gearbox with enough rating for a 7' cutter should run under $500.00 and the blade hub under $50.00, what is it going to cost to modify your deck and blade carrier? Just looking at your original gearbox diagram you will also have to consider the cost of swapping the yoke or hub on the slip clutch to match the spline on the input shaft of the Omni gearbox as your box has a single key smooth input shaft.
