I have a forced air furnace with 6 in ducts. One of the ducts is long and is not getting enough hot air. I was thinking of putting in a duct fan. Do I put it at the beginning of the fuct to push the air or the end of the duct to pull the air. What else do I need to know.

I had a similar problem. Not getting enough heat at the far end of the house. I remedied the problem by restricting the flow of air in the shorter ducts. Easy enough to do, because my house has adjustable dampers in all of the individual runs. Just loosen a nut, turn the thumb screw, and retighten the nut. Took about a weeks worth of re-adjusting till I was satisfied.

Put some next to outlet, also some aways in. Did not help the heat, The way the installer messed things up took out the duct they ran right through the room after pulling light switch out of wall and just letting it hang out of box. Pulled that duct out and closed things off and put in ventless heaters in 2 rooms, non sleeping. And the house is too dry as is. If I ever get them pulled out from under floow I will have 3 of those fans to get rid of.

I use 2 duct boosters I got from Northern Tool. They work pretty good. I wouldn't hesitate to use them in the situation you describe. Mine are the squirrel cage type, kind of a pain to install. THe fan type in the duct is probably easier, but it's going to reduce flow I would think.

I put just such a booster close to the HVAC unit for the run to the master bedroom upstairs. I only needed it for summer. It did well during the summers until I got a new HVAC unit better sized for the house.

As rustyfarmall said, dampers work easiest and use no power. If you do not have dampers on the ducts themselves you likely have dampers on your registers. If your outlets are simple grills with no dampers they are cheap and easy to change out so that you can get some with dampers. After a little experience I have learned where to set which rooms for summer and winter and it is free and easy to switch them.
