Powered Hand Planes

Looking at buying the one boy one as a Christmas gift. Any suggestions on a good one or if you have one what you like about it and would you buy another one like it? Thanks for all suggestions. J.

I've got a B&D one that works good. Came in a rugged plastic case, which is nice because it sits on the shelf most of the time.

son bought 1 at harbor freight. Its set under my bench for the past 15 years, he tried to use it 1 time and was going to throw it in the dumpster.

I've got a Ryobi that my brother bought me at a yardsale. It works well. I've also used a Makita at work. I liked it too.

The advice to buy a name brand is very sound . One consideration is the type and cost of replacement blades .
I have a Hitachi that came with old style flat tempered steel blades , I have sharpened these countless times over the last 30 years . Newer planes seem to come with strange little hooked blade edges that slide on . Every brand differs and none fit each other . I wonder just how many of these blades will be available in the next 30 years .

John, I was builder all my life and always used Dewalt tools and if you buy him a professional one he will be very happy with it. Chuck

I've had a Bosch hand-planer for 20 years and it's been great. Hit a lot of nails by accident and haven't even changed the blades yet.

I have a 110 volt Dewalt, a cordless Bosch and and a very old Porter Cable. I'd suggest buying the brand that has readily available blades. I like the Dewalt the best and I am not a big fan of any Dewalt hand tools. I just like the way it feels and the adjustment knob. The Bosch does have an adjustable shoot, so you don't blow the chips in your face. I use one at least twice a week as a trim carpenter/cabinet installer. I go through a set of blades every 3 months. (quoted from post at 13:13:44 12/06/14) Go for any name brand and you should be good. They work great for trimming horse hooves...

Wow! It's all I can do to sometimes to get the horses to let me use my nippers! I can picture me and a high speed blade and a horse having problems  When a ton of Percheron wants her foot back, she's going to get her foot back!

I know, "You have to work with the horse and train him to work with you." It all takes time and patience, 2 things I'm in short supply of!

Wife had a team of Belgian crosses at one time, I was shown this
by a farrier friend. You need to have a newer plane that has a low
kickback head, that way you cant gouge the hoof. Worked really
good for me, clean the foot out, and could trim a lot quicker than
nippers and then rasping flat.

I bet it works good. They make a rig that goes on a 4 1/2" angle grinder too. I can't imagine using that. My guys won't stand for a spray bottle, I can't imagine what they'd do with a screaming grinder by their feet.
