Brazing with propane?

I have a set of Victor torches with welding tips, and also a Smith cutting torch, that I bought years ago when I quit buying acetelene, and went to propane. I hated paying merge on the acet. Didn't use it up fast enough. I have a WD45 radiator bonnet, that has cracked around the mounting holes and the crack run out around 2" past the holes. I had the little mig welder stolen from the shop 3 years ago, and haven't replaced it, so I can't mig weld that thin sheet metal. I tried lighting up the Victor, with a acet. small welding tip, and cant get a good flame, with propane. I called Pacific Welding, where I buy my supplies, and they said that Smith or Victor doesn't sell propane welding tips, and my best bet was to try my Smith cutting torch. CAN THIS BE DONE?? Seems like I will just burn up my metal!

I don't think you can weld with propane anyway, something is missing without acetylene and it won't weld properly...which would explain the lack of propane welding tips.

I have brazed with a propane fueled cutting torch quite a few times now and have had no issues, though I wouldn't consider myself an expert of any kind. In fact I'm setting up my own torches right now, a cutting torch fueled by a BBQ propane cylinder and oxygen.

Get the smallest tip you can for your cutting torch. I think it would be a SC 40-0 for your smith. Still won't be perfect, but would be your best bet.

I've brazed with both gases using the same tips, propane and acetylene cutting tips are different, I quit using acetylene years ago

Thanks guys! With six guys, saying it can be done, and only one desenter, then I think it is time for me to play, with my regulator pressures, and find out why, I couldn't make a good flame. May be I also ought to run tip cleaners, thru my welding tips. Ralph

You need a new welding suppler,we sell them all of the time. Propylene and LP take the same tips and hose.

Are you talking about the curved welding tips in propane?? I can buy propane cutting tips, for my Smith torch, but was told not available for propane curved welding tips.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but here goes. My torch has been set up for propane for close to 30 years. I have and do braze with it. I have never tried to use the acetylene brazing tips with propane, I just use the cutting tip with the flame turned down real low and take my time. You just have to be real careful you don't hit the lever!! Sometimes not the prettiest brazing, but functional. Poor folks have poor ways. Chris

I use the curved acy welding tips with oxy/propane. Works fine, just use a size bigger for propane. Just for brazing though, propane does not weld good.
