some pawn shop finds

I stopped at 2 pawn shops the last couple days, found some craftsman wrenches that I got. first set was 8 wrenches, (2) 9/16, then one of each up to 1 1/8, skipping 15/16 and 1" (was looking for 15/16 so a little let down there....) and I paid $20 plus tax.

I noticed all of them except on the the 9/16 was a little heavier than normal and marked AB on the back, and then the part number in the middle like usual.

The next set I got at another pawn shop, I got 6 smaller wrenches. (2) 1/2", a 3/4, a combination 10/11mm wrench, a 15/16 Ace brand wrench, and I forget what the other size was. Got them for $10 plus tax

Thinking I should go back to the first shop and get the metric ones I saw. Second shop also had a bunch of Allied wrenches mixed in the loose bin, looked to be a slightly better than HF quality. Mainly looking for a few wrenches we can leave dedicated in a few pieces of equipment for shear bolts, or for adjusting the shear bar/knives etc... on our chopper

Might have to go back and see what else I can find... Hard looking at all the junk to find the gems though.

I have two sets of combination wrenches I bought at HF, one SAE and one metric. They were made in India and appear equal in quality to the best domestic made wrenches I have.

Before everyone has a conniption about imported tools, I might point out that some of the finest steel in the world comes from India. I've read of steel statuary in India that is 2,000 years old and still not a speck of rust.

I've been buying tools from pawn shops for over 25 years, and beyond the occasional 'special' tool rarely, if ever, buy anything new. In fact I've come to the conclusion that the older, name brand, stuff I can buy for $1 is of a better quality than it's new replacement that would cost at least $10. When it comes to the higher dollar items, like air tools, again, I can usually buy an older tool for one tenth the price of a new one, and still come out ahead even if it needs to be repaired.

Goose,

Yes but

I've had to do with 2 made in India workshop vices

And that puts a whole new and terrifying view on an Indian atomic bomb

I've got a metric set of hf wrenches, and when I was writing in my VW they were pretty useless. Didn't have an 18mm wrench, and the others would spread open on a rusted bolt instead of turning. Even on the enclosed 12 pt. side.

They work for most other jobs but I was less than impressed when I really needed them.

I've never seen a bargain in a pawn shop around here. Lot's of people tell me that they get things for a bargain price, but I've never found a bargain price yet.

A friend recently got his wood shop cleaned out.
The sheriff was his good friend. So he calls the
sheriff, instead of 911. 2 days later he gets all
but one tool back. The sheriff's dept found them
at 3 different pawn shops.

A while back, Indiana they passed a law that if
you sell any used items at pawn shops, you need a
photo ID. That includes selling scrap metal,
copper too. Scrap yards won't take any copper
from central A/c unless you can prove you are in
the HVAC business.

The man who stole the wood working tools was on
probation for the same offense.

I've never found anything of value at a pawn
shop, just the opposite, over priced. I stopped
going. Pawn shops don't have anything I really
want when it comes to tools. I definitely
wouldn't buy a power tool there.

Another story, man had a pawn shop and he
knowingly bought stolen goods after the new law
was passed. A criminal gets busted, flips on pawn
shop owner. The cops did a sting operation on
pawn shop. When they busted the owner, the cops
were able to take everything he worked for all
his life, car, checking, savings. Wiped him out
completely for not following the law. He is now
in the poor house. They even took everything his
wife owned too.

I got a couple decent wrench sets at pawn shops in Georgia.
I've been buying Mac wrenches off evilpay. Getting quality USA-made lifetime-warranty stuff for less than the no-name stuff at Orshlen's.

Had really good luck over the years. Just bought a like new set of Wright wrenches 3/8-11/4, in a roll, for 30. More Diamond adjustable wrenches than I can count, for $1 each, several Posi-Lock pullers $20 each. Greenlee portable bandsaw for $40, Earthquake gas post hole digger for $50. SK 3/4 ratchet for $20
All those just this summer.
All work great. Just don't EVER pay what they are asking.

"Hard looking at all the junk to find the gems though."

Yeah, but if the junk wasn't there the gems would be out in the open and someone else would've gotten them already.

I don't know where you find these pawn shops that sell stuff cheap. Around here they always seem to know *EXACTLY* what they have and what it's worth. Non-negotiable. No deals to be found.

I've had much better luck at sidewalk sales. The
stores put there old inventory out on tables in
front of the store with prices marked down. Once I
found three SK wrenches for $1 ea. A black diamond
snap ring plier for $2.00 and Black diamond 6in
cresent wrench for $2.00

The packaging on the black diamond tools looked
like they were in the back room for decades.

India weapons not likely to blow up on launch pad- they've proven they are nuke capable, now it is just delivery to next door likely. Indian weapons systems likely to be 'proven' design that will work as designed. Indian Army has some number 3 rifles in platoon yet, old vicker machine guns and some WW2 derived stuff in .303 and .308/7.62 NATO standard, Commonwealth standards and some old Soviet pattern stuff. They have a medium tank about like a M48 with some M60 features derived some from early Chieftan-- tested and proven last scrap with Pakistan. Aircraft mix of homemade, Soviet MIG under license with adaption- the MIG 21 with the under belly NR23-2 cannon pack is high and low attack capable, has some fire control derived from British and French- about as capable as later soviet unit but 1/2 the size. Indian Enfield Motorcycle- the 'Bullet' 535cc is coming into US market at about $6000.00 - looks about like a 1960 English Single cylinder because it is- made on some of old English tooling from the licensed to build for army use deal. Very simple design compared to current fancy sports bikes that cost $9000.00, easy to work on and not really break down prone. Give India credit- after the Congress party and their socialist ideas tossed in 1990 the industry caught up to a lot of standards and made deals with Japan and other countries- Harley has a partnership there now for import sales- still has some trade deal restrictions sort of like Mexico- need a resident partner. Time for some coffee- or maybe some Indian tea. RN

Around here most tools at pawn shops are stoles and I do not support the theivery business so I do not shop there.

I also have a few sets of HF wrenches. I have not put them to any really stressful tests yet, but they seem to be at least up to Craftsman quality. Some of their more expensive and polished sets bear striking resemblance to Mac and Snap-On. In any case, for most everyday normal service use, they seem to be up to the task. They are also guaranteed for life.
