Word processing program

Since I retired I haven't had much need to write formal letters .My word program has expired and I need to write some personal stuff that can't be farmed out .
Does anyone know of a simple program I can download [ preferably free] that won't take up miles of space ?
I only need the capacity to print off the odd letter , so don't really need any bells and whistles .

Thanks Ypop , just what I needed . Not too difficult at all to use . Fairly intuitive and user friendly . Took all of six minutes to download .
:D

I use
http://www.libreoffice.org/
for a couple of years.
If you can get MS to work this should too.
Mainly I use libre office calc which
is quite close to Exel but a wee bit clunky
at times. Once you get the hang of it quirks you are fine and might actualy prefer it over exel.

Open Office is a good deal since it's free.
The older standbys like Word Perfect, MS Word,
or MS Works lasted forever in older operating
systems. But now - I see if you've got
something like Windows 8 and the word processor
you had with Windows 7 won't work with 8 - you
are kind of screwed. I see the new versions are
more like rentals than purchases. They time out
after awhile . What a rip-off! We just got
lucky with my wife's laptop. It died and had
Windows 7. We got a new laptop with Windows 8
and her MS Word 2002 would not work. We got
lucky and found a free edition of MS Word 2007
and it worked fine with Windows 8 and will
never expire.

Charles,

Beware there is a divide between MS (.docx files) and Open Office which is Open Document format. Open Office will read the MS files but won't save to that format.

To be readable to MS Word users you should select the MS Word 97/2000/xp format to save as, and you'll get a message that that format might not work with what you're saving - ignore if you're not getting fancy.

I've been using it for a long time and no complaints.

If you're into fancy things with spreadsheets and macros it doesn't work the same as EX Hell.

Just to add my two cents, LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.org. Which is to say LibreOffice started out using the OpenOffice.org code base, but the LibreOffice developers have since improved it. Since Libre Office is where most of the current development is being done, it makes sense to use it rather than OpenOffice.

Another MSWord-compatible word processor is Abiword. I have not used it, but it is fairly popular.

I have Open Office 3.3 on my new computer. It may
have come with windows 7.

I still use my old computer with windows 95. It
isn't connected to the internet, but it works
great for doing my business records, word
processing, and spreadsheet. I like the old
school processors over the newer ones. I don't
look forward to the end of the year. I have 10
rental properties that I have to sort, tabulate
and print off about 20+ pages of records to send
to CPA. Computer makes short work, just don't
like doing it.
