I worked on cleaning out my dad's tool box, machine tools and the benches today. I got one bench cleaned off, so here is a picture.

I'm gonna print that and hang it on the wall over my bench, if I can find an unoccupied spot. I'll have to hang it high so I'll be able to see it over the junk.

I have a self cleaning work bench. Most of the time when I'm on a job I use the truck's tailgate. It get cleaned when I close the gate.

I cleaned a section of my garage today. I still have trouble throwing things away, things I'll probably never need until I pitch them. I did make a rack for wood out of a pair of legs from weight bench I bought at auction for a dollar.

If your shop is anything like mine, inquisitive minds want to know where you hid all the stuff that was on the bench top. LOL

:>)

BRAGGART!!...ROFLMAO!!

I can give you directions to MY sop IF you wanna keep on doing that kind of stuff!!

Your posting indicates this is "Dad's" shop / bench ... now what does YOURS look like?? Oh yes...mine is barely visible!!

(quoted from post at 04:25:22 11/23/14) Charles, that's easy, he just needs to paint it with
some VERY SLOW DRYING paint. LOL
:>)

My own bench was so covered in junk I had forgotten that it had a sheet of stainless steel fitted to the top ! :D

Nostalgia! those are the same kitchen cabinets that were in my folks home when I was kid. I am terrible about keeping my office organized. Last week when the town called because they couldn't find some information that they needed. I looked for about ten minutes in the records that I maintain and found it, so maybe I am better organized than the town.

About 1 month ago I got SERIOUS about cleaning up the shop and organizing. Lots of stuff ended up on a pile out back, but in the process, I discovered a brand new, still in the case, cordless electric drill. I do not remember buying it, or even bringing it home from an auction.

Now the secret is to resist placing things on the clean bench until you find a proper place for them while clearing the next bench. :)^D

I have 2 of my dad's benches that he made out of the old steel kitchen cabinets. He never had rollers on them and they are HEAVY, so I added them. I will probably clean them up and put on a new coat of paint next summer.

I am going to have to resist the effort to put things from the other benches on this one when I clean them.

I built three 10' long by 3' deep wood benches in my new shop, two nice storage areas for parts, oil filters, fluids and such. Both have five shelves, one is 10' long ant the other is 6'. There are bolt bins and free standing bins, along with several of those plastic cabinents with drawers.
I'm thinking, "what a great job I did, making all of this storage & work space'! With my old dad and two son's hanging around, along with myself, and several projects going at once, I can barely find a open spot on a bench to work!

usually when I clean one bench, all the junk gets piled on another one, and when I clean that one everything goes back on the clean one, never ending circle. But once in a while I do find one of my missing 3/4 inch sockets...

I use a friend's shop now and then. If I clear off the top of a bench to work, when I come back in 2-3 days, the top of the bench is covered with things again. It seems that he just can't stand to see a clean benchtop.

David, I did the same thing last Sunday. Workbench in the garage was overflowing with stuff and I knew there was stuff underneath there that I've been looking for. Sure enough, after spending just 1 hour, I had it down to the bare metal. A lot of stuff ended up in the trash: a jar of loose slot-headed screws, square nuts; a bunch of stuff my FIL gave me from cleaning out his pole barn. Ended up with a workbag full of tools that I took down to the basement shop. And yeah, I found a 3/8" combo wrench, spring loaded center punch, soap stone holder for my torch /welder setup, carbide scriber, folding wooden ruler. All things that I've needed in the last few weeks and couldn't find.

My son & I built a new 16' bench about a month ago, and what they say about horizontal surfaces is absolutely true. I'm having the very devil of a time keeping the top clear enough to work on anything.
