found this on you tube. looks pretty interesting. towable snow plow. i'd guess the tank is for weight, or , maybe liquid calcium chloride de iceing.

The MA DOT got a few of those last year. One unit can plow 22' wide. They couldn't keep them working more than two hours before something broke. They ended up sending them back to the dealer.

I like in the one shot that there is one headlight out on the truck....nice pre trip inpsection.

Really? Sometimes the "trip" lasts for multiple days with the lights on 24 hours a day. DOT rules do not apply.

See those a lot on the toll roads, especially in Oh. and Pa. Been out a couple years at least

Our county has installed side mounted blades on plow trucks. Mounted about middle of truck. Can be angled vertically and horizontally, so can be used to push back snowbanks in shoulders and ditches. Folds back beside the rear duals for transport. Have some sort of lazer to show driver path of side blade and spare some mailboxes. Think it may be more versatile than the tow-behind.

They've had wings on the sides of trucks here for quite a while now. Some have wings on both sides of the truck and I'd say they can do as much or more width of road than those rigs were showing.

Benefit of the wing is they can blade it back in the dithes and such to make room for more snow between storms.

Maybe I missed something, but a TRIP ends when a driver change, rest, or fuel stop is made. Don't know of any agency that makes drivers run more than 8 hours without a "potty", lunch, or any other stop.

Rube Goldberg is still alive!
As a couple people wrote below, wings have been around longer than any of us have been alive. Even a second wing for the left side of multi-lane highways.
IMNSHO, a wing is much more versatile, easier to control, & has to be a lot less costly.

If you look again it is just covered with snow. If you get the right wind it will blow snow right back at you out of the plow and cover lights windshield so you can,t see anything.

Wings aren't wide enough to plow a two-lane highway in one pass.

This eliminates the need for a second (or third) truck, or multiple passes.

Last spring I retired from plowing snow and if someone told me to take one of those things out and plow the whole road in one pass, we would have to call the people that have the jackets with no sleeves on them. You wouldn't make it one mile before you would be in a accident.

Those are used by the highway contractors here in Alberta and on the mountain passes in British Columbia. Watched a f150 drive into the back of one at well over 75mph last year near Lloydminister. Closed the highway for a few hours cleaning up the mess.

Iwas just in that area a little over a week ago .
Mother lives in the town of Eldon , Mo. I didn t ever see a tow plow but the one they showed sure wasn t doing very much. Looks like a waste of time .

MDOT just got 2 of these in the Brighton garage. They are a sight to be hold and most people freek out when it starts to open up. They said it would save 250,000 a year in plowing.

NSDOT bought a pair of them last year and one is stationed in the area here for plowing the 4 lane highway. From what I understand they work OK in smaller amounts of snow but in heavy snow conditions they can't keep them straight in the lane... and they couldn't keep engines or transmissions in the trucks pulling them. IIRC, they said one of the trucks had a 600 Mack and it was struggling... They take a MAJOR amount of power in heavy snow.
The idea tho, I think... is a good one. Clearing two lanes in one pass with another tandem behind to push back should be a LOT more efficient.
