Another Way To Hault A Project

I was cutting 4 inch pipe in the home band saw when Dixie called me in for a sandwich. I finished a cut and started another and went in the house. I figured it would cut thru as usual and I would start another cut when I got back out. When I walked thru the door the band saw was running with a broken blade. It was a blade that had only been on for a few cuts and I had not ordered another yet. They are now ordered. I put the pipe in the truck and will cut it at work tomorrow.

You don't really ever want to let a bandsaw run unattended. I did that once years ago and when I got back to it the electric motor was on fire. The blade had got stuck in the cut and stopped the motor. Melted the motor so I had to replace it.

Didn't know there was a band saw that would continue a cut without operator control! Wow, what will they come up with next?

may be this type

I had the thing same thing happen to me, but the motor was just smoking and extremely hot. The blade was jamed in the cut. It was a Taiwan saw but I think the motor was a driproof Chinese 1/2 hp. It always ran very hot even for a few cuts.
I replaced it with an old 1/3 hp US made motor and it barely gets warm no matter how long it's used.

I let mi,e go by itself all the time, but it's a $3000.00 Ellis with hyd feed rate control. Lol Guess it's all in how much you want to spend.

Ditto here. Got one of the cheapie 4x6 bandsaws going on 10 years ago, and it's one of the handiest, most-used tools I own. However, I don't run it unattended after I smoked the original motor when the blade caught in the cut. Replaced it with a spare I had from a pallet-full of various motors I bought when a local mill junked a bunch of machinery and now I stand there, or at least in the vicinity, when it's cutting. Pretty much all of these types have an automatic shutoff--usually just a little "L" of sheet metal set to push down a toggle switch when the cut is finished.

Similar to that one and I normally am where I can hear it sawing. Probly more than half the time I stand and wait for it to cut on larger stuff. The one at the tool shop has a cylinder on it and I don't.
Need to replace these lack of thought runners with some with some half 4 inch pipe welded into the runners over the axles.

Any one with a saw like this one, I suggest that you open the gear box and check the oil. I have one and the worm gear went out. I think for the lack of oil.

Another of what it took to get it fixed.

A friend has one of those that gets a lot of use. He buys his band by the bulk roll and cuts and welds it in a special little welder. You just fasten the two ends in, hit the button and it instantly arc welds the two ends together.

I will only let our horizontal band saw run unattended if I'm in the shop with it. My dad like to get all he can out of the blades, he'll run it till half the teeth are gone, drives me nuts.

We buy most of our blades pre welded, my welder doesn't weld the 3/4" stock very well.
