Got a 1 drive air impact wrench. Now what?

I managed to scavenge a Chicago Pneumatic CP797-6 1" drive air impact wrench from the scrappers today. This is not a harbor freight item (i.e. Central Pneumatic), this is the real deal. They sell for $800-900 and are apparently used for lug nuts on big trucks. I don't know if anything is wrong with it yet, but it probably needs new seals or something. Or maybe nothing.

Anyway, there have been several times when my 1/2 air impact just didn't have the guts for the job, when trying to remove big bolts and nuts on tractors and equip, so I'm very happy to get this. I have a huge compressor, so air is no problem.

So- assuming I can get it to work, should I try to amass 1" drive sockets, or simply get a 1" to 1/2" adaptor? From what I've seen, 1" sockets are just stupidly expensive new. Maybe I can snag some at an auction. Or maybe 3/4"?

Give me a shout when you get ready to get some sockets and let me know what sizes you need. I can't guarantee I'll have the sizes you want, but I know I have a lot of extras, in various sizes, that I will let go for a decent price. My email is open.

get it to work before you buy any sockets. In the tire shop they were good for about 1 year before they needed work.

Nice find ironandsteel! I would get an 1" to 1/2" adapter then look around for sockets as you need them being 1 inch impact you would tend to break
1/2 inch drive sockets!

Absolutely. I see that you can buy a rebuild kit for $72- don't know what it consists of.

Thanks- once I know it works, I'll be in touch. The problem is predicting what sizes I'll be needing. I guess I'll go around to my various machines and see what size the big bolts tend to be.

I have one that I bought at an estate sale and got the 1 inch socket set with it but I also have a 3/4 adapter and use them more than the 1"sockets.I think you will ring a 1/2 adapter off.Note DIRECTION of ROTATION and only use for taking apart to get full benfit of its power you need a 1/2 air hose.

I bought the 1" drive impact socket set from Harbor Freight. Also got the whole 1" drive regular set. Haven't busted anything yet!
Have you got 1/2" air couplers, and big enough hose?

Go for 3/4 sockets with adapter. Once you see how large 1 in are I doubt you will want 1 inch sockets.

You can pay for the sockets NOW or pay in adapters as you go. If the gun is any good it will twist those 1/2" adapters off like twinkies. I'd plan on at least a 1/2" line to feed it... and really a 3/4" if possible.
All that said... find out what's wrong with it first. You don't find that stuff in the scrap heap for no reason.

Obviously I'll try it first, but I have gotten unbelievable stuff from the landfill (not much experience with scrappers). One was a completely working pressure washer with hose and gas in the tank. I once got a Honda ATV with key in the switch, and gas in the tank. It needed a new spark plug. Often I've gotten things that needed only minor work. Still, this unit could easily have some major problem. I'll know tomorrow.

I guess I need to run a larger air line and couplers just for this? I need to research. Where I'll be using it, I am close to the big compressor, so I won't have to run far.

i have a long barrel cp gun that i use occassionally. i do have a 1 to 3/4 adapter so i can use my 3/4 impact sockets on it. you will need to go to 1/2 inch air lines and the high flow couplers, other wise, the gun wont produce any power. we use an outfit up in wisconsin, peterson hydraulics, that services hydraulic jacks and porta powers ect, and also does bigger air tools.

I see some of these guys are recommending you buy 3/4 " sockets with an adapter. Forget that nonsense, buy 1" drive sockets. I spent 22 years with a 1" air gun in my hands, I speak from experience.
