I have been quoted .30 a lb for used steel,the question is, what is new steel going for? The last time (15years ago)I went through this, new steel was cheaper. I can t price new till Monday, any help would be appreciated. 2X2 tubing.
 
I paid $1.50/lb. for 3/8 x 1-1/2 flat bar. It may have been old stock at the hardware, though.

The last time I bought steel at the salvage yard it was $.25/lb. But it has been several years.
 
Local welding shop is just under a buck per pound on most common mild steel.Usually doesn"t charge for cutting. Used to be higher some years ago.
 
Steel yards in Minneapolis are at .90 cents a pound. You can buy in ten foot lengths, or full length. They will cut it for you at a charge. You are still buying the full ten feet,or twenty foot.

There is a small business man selling steel at 22nd and Hiawatha, selling everything at .90 cents a pound. Like drops off a shear he paid scrap price for, short pieces of angle, round stock. channel, flats, all stuff he bought for scrap. Plus he does have a small amount of new steel in ten foot lengths at .90 also.
 
Thank you guys. What I am looking at is full length box, so I better get to town with the trailer.
 
For mild steel it usually over $1 per pound for 1018 or HRS plate or billet from a metal supplier.
I had some A36 plate quoted for $ 111 and it was 72 pounds total. 5 pieces.

When I quote jobs for work I just figure in $2 per pound for weldments and details that way I am not shorting the company when the product is sold.
30 cents per pound for scrap steel is not bad. I remember scrap aluminum was $1 per pound and copper was $2 per pound about 10 yrs ago. I do not know what the prices are now.
 
I went after the steel this AM,brand new painted stuff that has been setting for years.(still wrapped with banding) Grind the paint off of the welding points and I will be good to go!
