Dewalt Battery Pack Repair

Hello,
These are the last batch I went through. There are also 2 20V Lithium , only one pack out of 2.
I have found out that most NiCad's packs 3 to 5 year old usually have just one bad cell. That cell is the one that has both sides of the circuit. So when a charger is connected, both + and - are connected to that cell. I don't know if that is the reason why it goes bad. An 18 Volt pack should have 20 volts or better fresh of the charger,

I never noticed that but will in the future. Do you install a NEW cell in that position regardless if it's bad or not? Yes I'm so frugal I canibalize packs of cells that test good for use in other packs.

Hello da.bees,

I just take apart the packs and use the best cells. I load test them and choose the best ones.
I charge the whole pack while open, and load test each cell. I try to pick a bad one first, then check the voltage without the bad one. Takes time, but it keeps me out of trouble....

That's sorta how I do it but you cause me to consider new cells for the pivitol position. I use some new cells already but wondering if this might be making better use of them. I'm just happy you brought it up and can't wait to see for myself.
Don't worry,I wouldn't thy to make a brew ha ha if my observations differ from yours. There are plenty of those already and after the election count,I spect the pace to pick up.

Guido,
I used to replace one or two bad cells, but they never lasted. About 7 years ago I discovered aftermarket 18v NiMh dewalt batteries. They outlast any dewalt battery on the market and out preform the Li-ion. For $37.25 buy new ones off ebay. I have 6 of them. Bought 2 dewalt Li-ions and a charger. One battery died in about 2 years. However, get the new yellow charger. Unlike the old black charger, the new one is for all 3 kinds of batteries and it shuts off when battery is charged.

Hello da.bees,

I have been using NiCad's for many moons. Let the smoke out on some of them. I just started to get into the Lithium batteries. Already smoked some of them. they need a different charger and better care. They seem just fine, but although a bit ticklish!

Guido.

Hello George Marsh,

I favor the lithium Metal Hydride as well.
I smoked my 14V De Walt, one diode and 2 resistors later and still all the smoke came out.
Now I'll need to buy the charger that does all like you said. My 18 volt one will charge the 14 volts. I have some old Nickel Metal Hydride batteries(1991) to be exact, and need a charger for them. have you seen or used the new LiPo batteries? Supposed to be the cat's meow..

Guido.

Guido,
I have 5 new model chargers. One that I plug in the 12v outlet in truck, 2 regular 120v chargers. Then I bought 2 dewalt work radios. They come with a built in charger. If I leave a good battery in radio, the radio becomes portable. So try to buy a cheap older model dewalt work radio. You will get a 3 way charger plus a radio. Sometimes on black friday, I've seen Lowes sell the older style radio for $99, almost the price of a charger.

I found a used radio like I have on ebay. There are other models too.

Hello George Marsh,

I know about those radios. I'm only looking for a 120 powered charger though, just for the shop,

Guido.

Guido,
I work out of 2 different locations, one north and one south. I like to listen to radio when working. I also like to let my batteries cool down before charging, so having 2 chargers in shop lets me charge 2 batteries at a time.
George

Hello George Marsh,

I own several chargers. I can charge a single cell with the charging station I built years back. My racing charging station contains, among other things, 3 power supplies. One is adjustable from0 to 8 volts @ 6 amps. The R.C. racing packs have a dedicated 9 Amp reflex charger. For the drill packs I have 3 now, the 14 volts one, just smoked!
Here is the box. If you look to the right you'll see some old NiMH 1 1/2 AA batteries.
I just noticed the computer cover off? Don't know what I was doing with that,

Guido.
