Stihl hatchet

I really like the design and the feel of this hatchet. Seems like it would be good for splitting kindling. But, it's sorta hard to justify spending over $50 for a hatchet,

Anyone ever use one? If so, what are your thoughts?

I carry a Stihl PA 10 hatchet when I go to the woods. It is half that size and I use it when bar pinchs and have to use plastic wedge.Had to use it once to chop out stuck bar. I have a 70 year old Winchester hatchet ( belonged to grand parents) that size that I split kindling with. What ever steel its made of it rings like crazy when you use it.

Look into Fiskars and Gerber, they have a whole line of cutting tools. I have a regular axe, splitting axe, 2 hatchets and a machete, no complaints about any of them.

Probably very good as Stihl tools are( usually!) very good quality. I bought a pair of pruning shears a few years ago and at the time I thought I was a little crazy to pay premium price just because it said "Stihl" on them, but they are by far the best pair of garden loppers that I have ever owned.

Take an extra bar and chain with you then just unbolt the power head from the stuck bar and put on the extra one and then cut it out.

I have taken the power head off and cut the bar out. I used another saw to cut it out. When I go to the woods to cut wood I always take 2 to 3 saws with me. I never work on a saw out in the woods outside of tightening chain. If a saw gives me trouble I grab another and keep on cutting and work on the saw at night in work shop.

$50 for that?

I should buy a bunch of Hatchets, stencil paint Stihl on the handle, with some orange paint on the handle and sell them on Ebay for $40 (as a deal) I would make a ton of money.
Whadda yall think?

He is talking new hatchets and Stihl,Gerber< Estwing and fiskars all fall in that price range for new hatchets of that size. If you go into Wetterling or Gransfor Bruks your talking $120.00-$261.00 for the same thing. If you go into some of the Swedish steel axes you pay hundreds of dollars but hold a good edge compared to some of the other axes.

Re the attack on some cops by the crazy guy in NYC with an ax, it appears from the pictures on TV that his ax of choice was an Estwing. Fortunate that he was killed before killing someone.

KEH- That brings up another subject...

Why do some people call an Estwing hammer, hatchet, etc. an 'Eastwing'?

Mine might be older than 70 years old. My mother said her mother( who owened a old country store) had it before I was born and I am 68 years old.

D beatty- Sorry but I just did a search for 'Estwing' tools and got many "hits".

As for searching for "Eastwing" tools...all I got was "Do you meaan 'Estwing'?

I use Yahoo search and type in Estwing axe and click search. It will come up with a page with a lot of differant sites but scroll down to Estwing- offical site and click on it. It will bring up all their products.

D beatty- Sir/Mam', I think we are on the same page and agree that "Estwing" is not called "Eastwing".

(quoted from post at 19:51:55 10/30/14) Where do you put the fuel?
think that was an engineering mistake because the gas tank is right next to the cigarette lighter on that model...
Instructions read "Pull back and strike."
