Hello,

The outside air inlet to my fireplace. 8" pipe on the other side goes to both sides of the fire box behind the doors,

Hello greywolf224,

You are right! It makes a big difference. The manufacturer of mine claims 40% efficiency. It was not a building code here, just the way the manufacturer recommended to do it,

I'll go on a limb here and say: You are not the only one to have to crack a window to get proper combustion! By the way, the outside air gismo has a lever so I can shut the air coming in off. The fireplace side has one as well,

My vent comes in underneath the fireplace grate. Looks like a simple trapdoor that can be slid opened and closed. During a burning fire if you place your hand over the trap door you can feel you a lot of and air moving through.

Ours connects right to the bottom of the stove, a Jotul. Before I did this when the stove was really burning well you could hear it sucking, almost like a vacuum cleaner. The stove has secondary air to burn all the smoke so it probably uses more air than an ordinary one. The duct is insulated all the way to prevent condensation, it gets pretty cold drawing all that air.

great idea. I put a small damper under my kitchen stove (gas) where'in I get some air from my basement when the RANGE HOOD is running. Otherwise the hood is capable of causing a negative pressure in the kitchen and snuffing out the stove top burners.

I think this should be important for those "island" hoods that the movie star cooks have in their kitchens.

Hello John,pa,

Newer housing is getting so energy efficient, not letting much air in, that you need to go out to breath! HA! HA! Outside air for the kitchen is also important. I can never figure out why they put a fan over the cooking surface, and blow the air right back inside the room? Even the 300k homes!
