Torque multiplyer and a torque wrench.

I had some set screws that needed. Torqued to 400 ft lbs. we
have a big torque wrench that goes that high but it is kinda a
pain to use. One of the other guys at the shop suggested
using a 4/1 torque multiplyer and torque to 100 ft lbs. this
dosent need to be super accurate mostly I was just wondering
if this would work. I think it will be close but far from accurate.

ASSUMING your torque wrench capable of 100 foot pounds is accurate WHY do you not think it would not be accurate with a 4:1 gear reduction/torque multiplier?

I have used a torque multiplier for years to torque high torque tighteners. With a good torque wrench and a good multiplier you will get an accurate reading/torque.

I've used a TORQUE MULTIPLIER many times ......head bolts on 4000 HP INGERSOL RAND Model KVH and MODEL KVR. Torque HEAD bolts on V-16 CLARK 9000 HP. Torqued FLANGE BOLTS on 30" and 36" Mainline Natural Gas Pipeline. ( Now a HYDRAULIC ROTORY ACTUATOR is used.) The below picture is demonstrating the same MAKE that the Pipeline used. Double or triple stacked.

Nice to hear from someone that works on the big IRs and Clarks. We do the automation on them for PLC control of starting and running.

I did fuel injection on a 10,000 HP Clark.

Yes, it will work... but I think for that torque value, if I already had a good 3/4" torque wrench I'd just use that...

Hello Tvertiz,

Margin of error will be x 4. So A 5% error on the torque wrench at 100 Lb. will be 20 Lbs. at 400Lb.
Accuracy not being the issue, you have nothing to worry about!

Guido.

Will work good and they do sell them on ebay I got a torque X for about $120. USA made. If you get a used one take it apart make sure sun gears are ok & lub it....good to go.

I have torqued a lot,of them with the big torq wrench, you first torque them at 250lbs then all the way. I have a idea about, how much farther it should go that second round and when I was using the multiplyer and a smaller torque wrench it just dosent seem like it went far enough. I think I am gonna do a test at work to arrow and let you know what I find. I bet it will be like someone else said with about a 5% error.
