Welding Hood

I have an auto dimming welding hood. The area where I do most of my welding, has an 8' florescent light. The hood darkens just from that light. How come? Is it because of the type of light, or the amount?

Thanks,
Dusty

I found that if I tip my head down, light right over head, the helmet works.

I've owned my auto-darkening helmet for just over one year. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve, and I'm still learning.

Most auto-darkening helmets will activate if you point the sensor directly at any bright light. It's perfectly normal.

If it's doing it in general, your shop must have a lot of bright surfaces that create glare. White gloss paint on the walls will reflect the light and trigger the helmet, for example.

When I was a rookie at the frame plant, my auto
darkening helmet would switch itself on and off at
the oddest times, and cause me to get a mild
welding flash on occasion. Turned out that there
was a strobe light on the arm of one of the robots
that moved the part over to my area that would
trip the sensor.

I adjusted the sensitivity, and the problem went
away. But it took me about an hour to figure out
what was causing the sensor to get tripped.
