caution can lids

When I was doing the third batch of plum tomatoes I ran out of lids and rings. On the way to the store the local walley world only had the china after market stuff. I bought a 12 pack and continued canning. LOOK what happened to the fake lids! They were wrinkled and looked like part of an old tin roof. They DO seal but when cool and you push on the lid a little they go KA-POP!!!! I will stick with real Ball lids but when they were out of Ball lids..oh well.

Make sure you complain to the store about what happened. They actually do have an interest in not selling things which nobody would ever buy a second time. I'm not saying they will necessarily do anything about it, but they certainly won't if they don't get any complaints.

Those appear to be bulged up. Are you sure that the lids are the problem? Normally the lids should be under negative pressure form the contents and couldn't bulge up if they tried.

I tried those once. About half of them lost their seal. Not enough gasket material around the edge of the lid. I only buy Kerr now.

Looks like you had the lid rings too tight when in the canner, and couldn't vent, so they bulged. In the canner they should just be snug. Then tighten before cooling so they pull a vacume.

I've had that happen with Ball lids. It all depends on how tight you crank them down. They don't need to be very tight. I've used their lids the last few batches and have had no problem.

Ball (Kerr) and Golden Harvest are supposed to be made by the same people. There are also reusable lids out there made by Tattler.

Wow. I would NEVER trust my home canned goods to an unknown, no-name, made in China lid. I only see Ball lids around this area anymore. Never even thought of trying China Mart. I have only had maybe one in 100 not seal, and that was only on low acid foods. I'll gladly stick with Ball or Kerr. Thanks for the warning!

Like I discovered years ago, Greatest problem with Communist Made Products, other then the obvious, is the quality of manufacturing material.
Lowest grade steel and aluminum in the world!

last year, ran out of my regular jars, in a pinch went to wally world, got the mainstay and had 7 of 12 that didnt seal and 2 jars broke in canner as clean as if cut on saw. Never again

Your first mistake was not immediately going to the nearest grocery store and getting some genuine Ball brand lids. Even if it cost a little more...
