No, not Burt. I told my plumber last Jan that I wanted to get a new boiler in the house last May. I kept asking him when I would run into him, when he was coming, but I guess I just didn't have the right bait. I have always paid him right away. Anyway when we got to mid August I decided I needed to take action. I have a friend that I thought might sell me a new one at his cost, and he did. I finished the installation last week and borrowed a Bacharach kit to adjust it. Last night I was in the basement and the kit was still there and it got me to thinking that I ought to own one. So I looked on fleabay and found some used electronic units, models 10 and 200 for sale very reasonable. I am sure that there are some oil burner techs on here, so other than the usual pitfalls of buying used electronics, what should I be looking for or avoiding with these.

I've been doing furnace work off and on for maybe 40 years. I've used one a couple of times but never owned one. Always set by eye.
I feel that a draft meter is much more important.

I agree.

Never thought it was worth the investment to show off with.

I simply use that BLUE glass to look at the smoke, and, the draft meter. What else except the stack temperature for oil burners?

These appear to be all-in-one temperature, draft, smoke and CO2. John, what do you mean by BLUE Glass?

The "blue glass" reminds me of one of those pocket-type magnifying glasses. Except this glass is dark blue for looking at the oil burner flame while checking for lean or too rich of mixture of oil and air.

The old timers that I worked under had a special pair of glasses with the blue glass in one side and their prescription lens on the other. To look at the flame, they simply closed one eye.

Here of late, I have found so many furnaces that were installed and serviced by oil suppliers. Most of these were buring full rich over the last years. You can always tell by looking at the chimney from the outside of the house. Most are sooted-up too much.

The blue glass tool is available at most heating supply houses.
