22 ton woodspliter

I'm using my BIL's Husky 22 ton woodspliter from Tractor Supply & wonder if someone can help with a problem.

When U retrack the wedge it is supposed to kick out to neutral at the end of the stroke, but this one only does it a few times then it won't for the rest of the day. Everyone I spoke with that has one says it works OK on their's!

Is there an adjustment on the control valve somewhere? A new control valve for it is $189.00.

I tried emailing the company but never received a response.

There is an adjustment on the valve for the "kick out" pressure. I don't know where on that one. Do not adjust the pressure relief valve though, this is a different and seperate adjustment. If you can't find out which is which be sure to put the one that isn't it back where it was when you started tinkering.

I don't think that one is adjustable but there is a kit that you can put in them ( I have never put one in). If you do replace the control valve get one with the adjustable detent on it.

I assume the detent in the valve is not working properly, meaning the lever does not kick out once retracted ?

Has the splitter been left outside uncovered ?

I have a 28 ton Huskee, and it was doing the same thing, detent was sluggish.

I took that valve apart and cleaned everything, there was a little rust, moisture and old lube, and that was the problem, once I put it back together, I lubed it with white lithium grease, it works fine now, no hesitation, lever just kicks right out immediately, before it would lug the engine.

I would suggest taking it apart, clean and lube, check any o rings etc. should do it.

I agree. When I bought my splitter new last year it would do the same thing. All that it needed was to adjust the lever control valve so it would kick out on the retract. I believe mine was a allen headed screw.

Might be the adjustment is set at the high side of spec. As the oil warms the hydraulic pressure drops enough to not actuate the kick out. There should be an adjustment on the pump to raise the standby pressure.

According to the MFR, if its the same valve. its factory pre-set, after examining one of these, hard to figure how it could be off, seemed odd, a good cleaning should take care of it, reminds me of a sticky action in a gun, same thing applies.

Thanks for all the helpful advice! As soon as I can I'll look at it closer & see actually what is there. I believe there is that detent adjustment. Hoping a little adjustment is all it takes!

My BIL is 86 years old & is hard worker but not in general repairs, he won't part with the splitter either, I offered to buy it from him but he says he's not parting with it but I can use it any time I want!
