Sears Garage Door Opener on the fritz.

I have a Sears 1/3 HP (not sure of the model but I can check) garage door opener that's driving me nuts.

It's just stopping for no reason, up or down. If it stops enough times (when you just keep hitting the button) the whole unit seems to turn it's self off, the light on the wired button goes off and the lights on the safety eyes go out as well. I have to kill the power to it, let it sit for a second, then power it back up to get in going again.

It has it's fits in spurts too, I went weeks with out a hitch and today it stopped ever 3 inches!

There's nothing fetching up, I can unhook the door and run it up and down with no problem and it will stop even with the door unattached.

It's not the eyes, the door reverses when you brake the signal, this is just stopping.

It also suppose to blinks it lights to give you a code to tell you what's going on, that's not happening either.

I have two of them and my other one hasn't give me a lick of trouble.

Any ideas?

The bushings and or nylon gears are badly worn or stripped.
This results in the lift mechanism jamming and the motor
overheating and the thermal protection shuts it down until it
cools. Unless you are mechanically handy, it many times is
cheaper and easier to just repace the opener if in fact these
are your issues.

I just googled the gear and I think you are right.

What's funny is the other opener gets used more and it still OK. Go figure.

If it is indeed the plastic gears stripped ? They usually just quit all together ?
It's easy to check. Unplug the unit and unbolt the cover and take a peek. If shot you will see plastic shavings and no teeth around the gear. Easy fix. I get the parts pretty cheap off ebay. You can google the repair. Heck my sister even did hers !

They are pretty easy to replace, especially if you can just replace the head and reuse your old rail and brackets. The hardest part is wiring and aligning the new photo-eyes.

How old is the old one? You could spend all winter fighting it or just buy one when they go on sale and replace it before the weather gets really cold.

Unhook the opener and manually try the door to make sure it is not binding. Maybe the springs are weaker on this one ?

Take off the cover on the motor assembly and look for a mud dauber or wasp nest. Sounds like the same problem I had recently. Good luck, Brian

I think your sensors are slightly misaligned based on your door behavior. Your drive mechanism probably is not your problem. Try realigning your safety sensors or make sure the sun is not hitting them.

I have problems when the sun is shining directly
on the sensor. Also, for some reason, the sensors
get out of alignment. And the worst issue is
spiders build webs over the lens and light
attracts other bugs. Have to clean it twice a
week.

When my sears opener failed, I purchased a new one,
gennie. I was lazy and tried to use old sensors.
The sensor lights showed they were good, but
actually they wered bad. So I have a spare opener,
just need sensors.

Sounds like an intermittent open circuit in the incoming power supply.

If everything is going blank, including the diagnostics, it's loosing power somewhere. Could be a simple as the incoming electrical connection, a broken solder track on a circuit board, loose wire, etc.

Don't think it's a photo switch, they only stop it going down, not up.

Don't think it's an overload, that would show on the diagnostics.

Since you have 2 openers alike, switch the suspected components, see where the problem follows.

I really don't think it's the sensors.

When they get tripped the door goes back up, now it's just stopping plus this is happening when the door is going up and down, they've never tripped on the way up before.

I'm going to take a peek at the gears. It did get better when I oiled all the rollers, I'm guessing that was just a band aid.

The springs on mine got weak and caused the gear to break. I would check the spring tension. The gear cost me $12.00

We had a similar problem and it turned out to be
dirty circuit board, I sprayed it down with contact
cleaner and it was OK after that.It must of been a
combination of dust and high humidity, same thing
happened to the organ at our church.
