Howdy folks. New to this forum, but use others provided by YT. I was cleaning and servicing my 1956 Shopsmith Mk 5 today and was wondering how many out there have/use one. I bought this unit in 1964 at a yard sale for $200 and have enjoyed it ever since.

I bought one from the early 80s last spring for $400 with a lot of accessories like the bandsaw that I didn't need, by the time I sold off all of those things I had made back my $400. I use the lathe, sanding disc and line boring systems only. I use the sanding disc for a lot of things, the line boring for drilling holes in banjo rims and to mount dobro necks and the lathe mainly for banjo rims and resonators. I have turned a lot of rims on my old lathe and now on the Shopsmith but my old lathe wasn't big enough to turn resonators so I have only made two so far to order.

Bought a Mark V in 1981 while stationed in Pensacola, FL.

It was the ideal tool for living in military housing or other situations where you didn't have a shop.

Still have it, but when I retired and built my garage with a bay reserved for a woodworking shop, I bought a "real" tablesaw and a compound miter chop saw. I also found a deal on a stand-alone jointer I couldn't pass up.

The Shopsmith sits along one wall and I still use the bandsaw and disc sander a lot, the horizontal boring set up fairly often and the lathe occasionally. I haven't put a saw blade on it in years tho.

There was one left in the basement when I moved to this house. I traded it for a tool post grinder. Win ,win , I could grind hardened steel and the other guy could make bird houses all day
