need a small boring tool

I am looking for a tool to bore a hole out to
say 3/4 inch and put a bushing in it what would be
a good tool to purchase for this? the hole might
be egg shaped, thought about using the drill press
with a bigger bit but that wouldnt be too precice.
What I am trying to do is bore out a small hole in
a housing and put a bushing in it any help will be
appreciated

what you need is a reamer. It needs to be one that will clean up the hole size but
give you about a .003 interference for the bushing to be pressed fitted

The usual method of getting a precise round hole is with a reamer. A 3/4" reamer will run you $30 at Enco. Typically you drill it slightly below size and then run the reamer through it. If you were closer to NY I'd let you use one of mine. Depending on the specifics of your projects this may or may not be the best way of going about it, but it's a common one for many similar occasions.

I would drill a hole that size through a piece of scrap, the thicker the better, 1"+. then clamp or tack weld this piece to the egg shaped hole to act as a guide. Use lots of cutting oil, and feed it slow. It won't be perfect, but it will be close. Maybe drill it undersize and then ream to size.

I have been amazed at how well a reamer works for truing up an oblong hole. I have put them in the drill press and used them just like a drill, without any pre-drilling either. Works great.

Is the hole location critical? A reamer will make it round but if it's worn to one side the reamer will follow it. Boring it in a mill is best if you need to maintain the location.

If your putting a bushing in a hole that has egged shaped off center and it needs to be on center it will be difficult to hold center on a drill press.

A reamer will work if U don't have to remove too much metal. Reamers aren't meant to cut a lot of metal. Where are U located? I'm in Galloway Ohio. I have a small machine shop. If U go the reamer route, use a hand reamer, not a machine reamer. If U ream it with your drill press, run it slow and flood it with water to keep it cool.

Hello,

You could use a reamer drill. They make the final size pretty close, when used very slow at the end,

How about a 'bridge reamer'? I think that is what it is called. Kind of like Guido's tapered drills. Probably kind of pricey for just one hole.

I have a complete set of adjustable reams that would do the trick. I purchased them used off an old mechanic in 1979. They come in very handy when making bushings fit in an opening or cleaning out the inside of a bushing after it's pressed in.

Once I had to make a bushing using 2 bushings for a 50 year old cement mixer. Couldn't get one that had a large OD and a small ID. So I got two bushings, one with the right ID and another with a large enough OD. Turned the larger one down to fit hole, then reamed the larger one out to fit the OD of the smaller ID.
