bi-fold door

Thinking about making a bi-fold door for the front of a small barn , it would only be about 10 ft. wide . I have overhead doors but there is a loft in the back and when the overhead was open it would block getting up there . I was thinking useing alum overhead doors and making two ridged pieces for the door . Has anyone done anything like this of know a site that shows how to put one together that will work right .

Depends on elevations. Is there enough clearance for the bottom to clear the ground when opened? Do you live in snow country? Snow would have to be cleared away before you could open the doors.

How are you going to hold the doors open on a windy day? Uncle had a high bi-fold door on a barn lean-to. They were difficult to hold open on a windy day, even though they were pinned on the bottom. The working action of the wind would cause the pins to rise and the doors to close.

I made a bi-fold door for my shop. It's 16 ft. wide & about 12 ft tall. Bought a small winch to open it.Works pretty good .I made it out of 2 inch square tubing then put tin on the outside & insulated with 4x8 foam sheets that are 2 inches thick. i like it because when open it makes sort of an awning.Plus it was alot cheaper than buying a ready made one

Not a bifold, but rather a lift door KIT. Has vertical tracks up the posts on each side and curved tracks overhead to guide the top of the door. Uses a winch and counter weight, Its a kit, you can build it any width and height given the right kit.

Do you want a bifold that lifts up (aircraft hangars use this kind of bifold) or do you want one that works like a closet door (one company makes these for aircraft hangars also, I have a set.) you can get them made any height and width.

Paving or concrete outside must slope down away from the door track as the doors open out and would hit or seals drag if level or paving was higher.

I have a small barn 16x22. To install a 9x7 overhead, I cut part of the loft back, problem solved. Smaller loft, but easier to get long boards in loft. I use barn as a place to store used lumber and park a tractor or car in.

That is what I want to do charles . Want to get all the tried and trues of it before I do it .

(quoted from post at 19:02:42 09/25/14) google "Schweiss bi-fold door".

You want a solid, strong and dependable door. You want one of these higher power hydraulic doors. They ship out of the South and the Mid West.
