Transmission job

JOB

My son has a 09 Focus with standard transmission and the roll pin broke in the shifting tower. I have been told the transmission needs to come out and be gone through. Was also told the flat rate book says it is a 5 hour job to remove and re-install.

I was wondering just how big of a job or how complicated is this job, and do you need any special tools? I would guess a shop manual would be helpful also. Anyone have experience doing this?

Get the shop manual first. You will probably find that you need a ton of special tools. Most of those manual transmissions are throw-away units anyways. When I worked in the dealerships, most stick shift jobs ended up with just a replacement transmission. Cost to repair was too expensive to justify.

That's part of the problem today. Nothing is able to be rebuilt, just put in a whole new tranny. A few years back I pulled the tranny in my 78 F150 and replaced two gears and all the bearings. Not a bad job to do and the old girl ran another 100000 miles.

I don't know anything about Focus shift tower but these folks seems to..

If you stop and think about it for a second, replacing instead of rebuilding generally makes sense.

Your downtime is a lot less. A mechanic can swap out a transmission in a couple hours tops, but he could fiddle-fart around all day, or longer, tearing apart your transmission to fix one little thing.

Then what else does he find while he's in there? Probably something.

Then what else is going to go wrong after it's back in the car?

After a couple of trips to the mechanic to fix piddly problems you would have been money ahead on a complete rebuilt transmission the first time around, and you would have had your car back a whole lot sooner.

If you're doing it yourself and your time is free and you don't care about how long you are out of action, sure. Most people these days want to be back on the road ASAP, as time is money.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I was told these newer transmissions aren't like the older ones. And are harder to work on. He is thinking about having a transmission shop fix the old one but remove it himself and put it back in himself. That though could change also.
