OT: Refrigerator knocks or pops????

Amana with bottom freezer emits sharp knocks or pops every now and again. Seems to be when compressor turns off, but not sure. No pattern to it. Everything seems to be ok temperature wise. Been doing it for a year at least. Any ideas.
Thanks. Leo

If it has been doing it that long it's not likely anything internal, I would guess the compressor may be loose either due to worn mounts or loose bolts and the vibration when it cuts off causes a slight rotation. If you are able, might pull it out and just check the mounts. If it were internal, meaning inside the compressor, it would likely do it all the time, kinda like a loose connecting rod in an engine. Just my thoughts.

Yes - I would agree with David G. My Maytag can pop pretty good during the defrost cycle. The compressor will be off during defrost.

David, the noises you hear while defrosting is likely drops of water, (melted frost) dripping on to the heating coils. I can't hear mine from the outside, but one night I opened the freezer section and saw a faint red glow and heard a loud hisss. First thing I thought was, "Oh boy, another repair bill." Then I realized it was in defrost mode and the glow was from the heating element in back of the freezer compartment. and the hiss was a drop of water that had hit it.

Thanks, I expect it must be the defrost cycle for some reason. I thought at first is was the Pergo type laminate flooring under that area, expanding and contracting with temperature changes and burdened with the weight of the refrigerator, did not easily slide. The flooring has a laminated plastic layer for sound deadening.

I have a maytag in the basement, 5 years old or so, it does this since new and I have always wondered what the heck it is. Funny thing about this forum, if you read long enough, sooner or later something like this comes up, same question you may have liked to ask, but never think of it while you are here ! That refrigerator is near a recliner, kind of a lounge area, back of the garage and at night, while sitting there watching TV, it does its thing and you think someone or something is inside it with a nylon mallet LOL !

My side by side freezer would "pop" once in a while for a couple months, until I finally tracked it down to a tooth missing on a little plastic gear in the icemaker.

The gear was connected to another little gear and was only used when turning the tray over to dump the ice.
When it came to that tooth that was missing, it would skip over the missing tooth causing the thump or pop sound, then would engage the next good tooth and go on.

The part cost me $7 shipped, so I got off easy. 8)

Hi Greygoat! I found your name looking to rebuild my Scott Atwater Model K floor jack, and it would be invaluable if you still had information on it. Sorry to bother you, and thank you! Also, my email is my username at gmail if that helps.
