I was at an auction today and I bought 2 lighted magnifying glass for $5. These are the free standing ones that doctors have in the examination rooms. Will be nice to be able to use both hand working on Carbs and such.

My wife talked me into going to an auction yesterday. Really didn't want to go. It started at 9:00. We got there at noon. Old man that had a swap meet type thing was being taken back to Wisconsin by his kids. All the household goods were gone as well as the yard stuff. When we got there they were about 1/3 of the way down the swap meet stuff. most bidders had left. Only about 5 or 6 left. You would not believe what I got. One 1 1/2 ton and one 4 ton floor jack , new. New 1/2" impact, air chipper and die grinder. Tires, trailer tongue jacks, new. Boxes of hand tools, including some proto, Armstrong, craftsman. A dial torque wrench. Paint, two 15 gal, one ten gallon and five 5 gal. propane tanks. three of the 5 gal. were full. A box of brass fittings. two air nail guns. New chisels, punches, motor oil, stabil, a box of green tire sealing goo. Car care stuff. I could go on and on. And I also bought a 2 axle trailer(mobil home axles and wheels). It was a really hot day, looked like it was going to rain, The auctioneer was tired and started bunching boxes of stuff together. You will NOT believe, and will probably call me a liar but all I spent was $180.00. $60.00 of that was the trailer. Now, where am I going to put all that stuff.

Good purchase! I'm at the age where I'm wondering what my kids will do when it's time for me to move on. All that valuable stuff.

I spent quite a lot of money on one of those rigs. Thought it would be the ticket for carbs, just like you said. Only problem is that by the time I get far enough back to get a really good, in focus look I'm 4" too far away to reach anything!

That's the way things go; things that we think are valuable the kids will throw out or give away (or sell so cheap that it's a give-away).

The realtors tell us that there are some real bargains when old folks pass away here. The kids come and sell whatever they can for whatever cash they can get for the stuff. Put the house up for sale at market price but most will accept whatever someone offers to get their hands on the cash quicker.

Like me......time to sell off some of that "valuable" machinery that hasn't been used for years. Cannot think of any more projects that require 'em.

Eventually rent the house from the kids. 1 room with kitchen priveledges. Or, find someone who still needs work done.

That's how it goes Dick. My buddy Tony got a frantic call from one of his friends to get over to his house quick. A neighbor had died, and the out-of-state kids were there cleaning out the house. The neighbor had seen them put two fiddles in a dumpster, and had made the frantic call to Tony. When Tony got there a bonfire was raging and a guy was fixing to throw the neck of a stand-up bass fiddle on the fire. Tony stopped him and asked if he could have the neck, and the guy said yeah, and the body is still in the house - you can have it too. Tony glued it all back together, and has a beautiful old Kay stand-up bass made in the 20's. And two fiddles. I guess there's two sides to every story - the kids probably couldn't spend much time away from home and work, so they went to the extreme with the cleanout.

Neighbor found a baby grand piano at an estate sale. Started out at $1,800. Lady called her next day and offered it at $900. She said even if it were a car that she needed to get to work in, she couldn't go that high. So she got it for $600. Finish isn't the best, needs tuning, but probably worth $3,000-9,000 anyway.

Remember, you got to do what you got to do. About ten years ago, brother had stroke. Single, lots of guns, old equipment, small farm, no money. Attorney wanted me to sell the stuff privately. I tried. My kids bought quite a bit at the value I had to asses all the property at when court appointed me guardian & conservator. Things that meant something special to them. I bought the old tractors that dad had bought new. I had to have an auction, no choice. Take what you can get to pay for his care in nursing home. Sold the farm next to neighbor that he had worked with for several years. Brother outlived his assets by two months.
