Some of the DIY security systems (non-wireless) come with 60' of camera cable. Is this a reasonable max length (won't work for me) or can it be 'up to x' depending ...........

If 100' is usually doable, that would fit my layout.

Don't use real big words in your answer.

According to Backstreet Surveilance:

1500' of RG59 is max for camera video cable.

But 12v dc power length is according to wire used:

18 Gauge Wire - 250 Feet Max
16 Gauge Wire - 300 Feet Max
14 Gauge Wire - 400 Feet Max
12 Gauge Wire - 500 Feet Max

Your users manual should tell you what max length would be. If you don't have the manual go to the manufacturer's website and search.

The key to restricting long runs is the power feed, not the video side. I have several cameras at our shop that have 165' cables and we had to set up a power transformer at their location.

Simply plugging one in and feed to the camera with a short section.

I buy the longer cables on Ebay and they are pretty cheap.

You can use a set of cctv passive baluns and cat5 cable to go 1000 feet. You need to protect them from getting wet.
