Painting Tractor Rims

I deflated the tires and broke the bead with a flat bar just enough to slip a piece of trimmed, thin cardboard between the tire and rim. This worked fine. Oh, the tires were off the tractor of course.

Spread grease or gasoline on the tire where you don't want paint it will come off with the next power washing.

I"ve used a piece of cardboard about 1 1/2ft wide. Press it against the tire rim firmly enough to make an impression. Cut the cardboard along that line. Then as you"re pressing the cut cardboard up against the rim, do your paint spraying of the rim. Rotate the rim to do this all way around.

I use a rag and rub used motor oil on rubber. Wipe off after I spray. If paint drys a little, put gas on rag, paint comes off very easy.

I like this method too, depending on how tough the bead is to break. I've also used goopy style hand soap too , Go- Jo etc . Spray the wheel , after it dries hose off the tire...

this works well for me - except:
I use roofing flashing pieces instead of cardboard - can put some uummph on them pushing in place between the rim and bead.

I just did a pair of 13.6x28s using a brush and a piece of aluminum flashing. The result looks at least as good as anything I've ever done with an HVLP gun. The trick is to use a really high-quality brush (I used a Purdy sash brush) and if you have reasonably steady hands you don't need masking tape or Vaseline or whatever.

I clean it off with lacquer thinner and a rag making sure I'm on the bottom of the tire below the rim. Makes the sidewall look nice and black and clean too.

(quoted from post at 06:37:23 09/13/14) Autocorrect thought vasoline should have been gasoline.

 Glad you came back to straighten that out,I was about to question your sanity. :)

I got the shrink wrap rolls that were too small for the machine at work it is about 18 in. wide, still has about 1 in. plastic on it, use 2 in. masking tape torn off in short pieces around tire next to rim then start rolling out plastic around tire, i roll tire across shop with roll dragging behind, about 4 wraps and tape edges of plastic to tape already on tire. i have done several rear & front tires this way, no cleaning.
