rapid air for shop

Thinking about extending air in my shop. Rapid air says something like it's good for 140 lbs. at 120 degrees. If my shop is shut up in the summer ,it could get that hot or hotter. should I be concerned? my compresser shutes off at 170 PSI.

A friend of mine used that product or something similar 'cuz he likes the easy way out, even though he has nothing to do in his LARGE farm shop for nine months out of the year.

On the other hand, it can be done for a LOT less with good old-fashioned black iron pipe or copper and some sweat equity..

Like Bob said black pipe or copper. I put in all new copper lines in my shop a couple month ago and it turned out great. For me I find the copper easier to work with, cut, solder and move on. No threading, taping, or trying to get joints lined up. Also my solder joints are a lot less apt to leak than my threaded joints.

Pex is rated for pressures close to that, maybe a little less. I ran 200 feet of 3/4 inch pex underground from one shop to another shop but it's in conduit underground to protect it and if my pex experiment fails I can pull it back out. The pex I used is rated at 160 psi@50 degrees.

PEX is not certified for compressed gas, as has been discussed many times here. Buried in conduit I don't suppose it matters much, but I wouldn't use it for piping compressed air within a shop.

I found something at the RapidAir site that says maximum working pressure of 150 psi and temperature rated -40 to +180 F. I'd say you're OK on the temperature side. Do you really need 170 psi air? I normally leave my regulator at around 90 psi. Just keep your regulator below 150. You could also readjust your pressure switch; it will be cheaper to operate your compressor at lower pressure and that will have no effect on the CFM.

Looking at the RapidAir site, it looks like a nice product, although not exactly cheap. My biggest concern would be the pipe size; 1/2" OD tubing is much smaller than 3/4" or even 1/2" black pipe.

That is made for plant air @90-100 psi. Never, ever exceed manufacturer specifications on pressure.

I agree, copper or black iron.
