OT: Retiling a deck.

I have a deck of 12x12 red quarry tile over garages. The grout cracked and let water leak into the 2x6 T&G decking and joists underneath causing damage.
I cut out the grout with a Model 77 Skillsaw and a diamond blade. The tiles came up still stuck to the inch thick mud and the chicken wire that was laid on the deck before the mud was poured. The original waterproofing was hot mopped and probably roofing paper.
I sistered the joists and put down new 2x6 T&G. I will use a single compound rollon waterproofing which will probably add less than 1/8" thickness. I would like to use the original tile and save $450. Part of the deck is still good and new tile is not the same color.
I now have a choice of cutting down the 2x6 deck in depth and/or grinding off some of the original mud from the back of the tiles. The question is: if I use thinset morter what is the thickness it needs be so the tiles can be leveled? If I must use traditional mud, what is the minimum thickness needed?
And if by some chance I can use exterior flooring construction adhesive to stick to the waterroofing membrane, I'll only have to remove about 5/32" of the 2x6 and/or mud on the tiles.
Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.
Of course I should have asked these questions when the T&G was available to run thru a planer to allow for the thinset, mud or adhesive.
