Cell phone question for unlocking

I found a Samsung Galaxy Mega on Metro PCH network. I have tried to find owner, no luck. I got into phone and found PH #, called and is disconnected. Really nice phone so I decided I would like to use it on AT&T. I have tried to find out how unlock it, no luck. Went to Metro PCH store to see what I could do. They checked # under battery and said phone had been lost and insurance bought another and insurance did something where it can't be used. I would think there would be some way I could use this phone. Anyone know

You might try this, but no guarantees. I'm having problems with Verizon not wanting or not being able to unlock my Samsung phone after my contract expired and I cancelled service with them.
Poke Here.

Have you considered contacting the insurance company that originally paid out on the lost phone? Might make it usable to you that way. Insurance company might be able to undo whatever they did to disable it. Most likely would want a fee for that. Just a thought......

That cell phone is dead and gone just as if it were
stolen. You are trying to get something for nothing,
it doesn't work that way.

Yes I want to use that phone. However I have made ever effort to find the owner, advertised craigslist, retrieved # and called and went to service provider. Why would you call it trying to get something for nothing. You find a bag of money on street and turn it in to police and no one claims it, it is yours. Would you not accept that bag of money?? You prove to me the phone is yours and I will give it to you. Since you think I'm being a crook I'll even pay shipping to you.

You are probably fortunate not to have found the owner . I was unlucky enough to return a lost phone to one of the 1% of the population that are [ insert your favourite word for not very nice ]
Rang the number , found the owner , returned it to their address all with no expectations of anything but a thank you . Rang the doorbell and found myself surrounded by '' boyfriends '' of the owner all accusing me of being involved in a burglary . I think that the only reason they believed I was genuine was because I am almost 60 and was wearing a suit .
Next time I find something like that it's the local Police station or the bin for it .

Most cell phone companies will unlock your phone if 1) you're out of contract and 2) you bought the phone from them. In your case, neither is true. You never had a contract with Metro PCH and you didn't buy the phone from them.

Money analogy may be flawed in some Texas(?) cities. Story on national news about 3 months ago about a little (homeless?) girl who found a bundle of cash, turned it in, it wasn"t claimed. She/parents were then informed that unclaimed property (including cash) in that jurisdiction became city property and did not default to finder. Short time of "outrage" over incident, never did hear any further resolution.

Certainly no impropriety on your part on the found phone, but once insurance had paid for it, it essentially ceased to exist.

In the article the key words were: "ILLEGAL" & "a felony punishable by five years in prison".

My wife and I found a cell phone on the ground in a handicap spot in a rest area. I had just watched a person load a scooter on a rack on the back of a car. We figured it belonged to that couple so we called the most frequently called number. It was the owners closest friend. She left a note on the owners door, so they used her phone to call. We got the address, and mailed the phone this AM. The conversations were on her phone, and The post office is the return address. I think we are pretty insulated from any repercussions.

Ok, there are hundreds of forum sites out there dedicated to hacking cell phones, and you came to a TRACTOR forum to find out how to unlock it?

Jeez Louise man, most of the guys here can barely DIAL a cell phone let alone hack one. No offense guys, you know it's true and half of you readily admit it.

All you're going to get here is moral outrage.

IMHO the phone is a paperweight at this point. If you want it to do some good you could donate it to one of those battered women programs because it still dials 9-1-1.

Stolen phones have the esn put on a list or database that all carriers have. this list will not allow that phone to ever be activated again. This list is also used for illegal hacking phones that use somebody else's account to make free calls. Once a phone is on that list, you will never be able to get it activated again.
