The farmers and contractors that I talk to say that they are using Russian satellites for there GPS. Are we paying for this service? Why not our own? What happens if things deteriorate with Russia?

I think Russia prevented a big mess from spinning out of control like in the middle east mess.

What they are referring to is the Glonass satellite constellation. In the northern US it gives more satellites to choose from for GPS. The Russians could lock the signals for their govt use only, but then any other areas that use the signal would be out too, notjust the US.
